SENIORS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 16-23-119 def SCORESBY 12-11-83
A cold windy day on the hill at Scoresby. In came McKernan for his first senior match along with Henderson and out were Pisano and T.Bird. The scoreboard win by 42 points looks comfortable but it was hard fought and we only really broke away midway through the last quarter. It was a valuable win securing 4th spot as Noble Park and Blackburn played a draw.
Scoresby kicked with the wind in the first term to the scoreboard end. We were well on top early and the signs were good. Froud kicked our first then Froud kicked his second via McKernan. Cotchett kicked a late goal into the wind to give us the lead at
¼ time. Mullett was good early along with onballers Mendes and Stephen. At ¼ time we led 3-4 to 1-4.
Despite kicking with the wind in the 2nd quarter both teams kicked 5 goals each. Nummy kicked our first but soft defensive work allowed Scoresby to goal. Greig goaled via Froud and at this point I noted our tackling and intensity was good. Froud was a live wire up forward. McKernan kicked a goal beyond his years from the boundary. When Froud goaled via Bardon the signs were terrific but all of a sudden a change came over the game. Scoresby kicked 3 quick goals and all of our hard work was eroded. Greig goaled on the siren to give us a 14 point lead at the break. Cotchett was terrific at the centre bounce as was Mendes. Ross was starting to have a major influence on the game and later played a lone hand when McLure was injured. At half time we led 8-12 to 6-4. Better players for the half were Mullett, Cotchett, Mendes, Nummy, Stephen, Ross and Froud.
Scoresby came out on fire kicking the first 5 goals and hit the front by 11 points. The signs were not good. All of a sudden we looked slow. Greig goaled via Henley and Stephen to bring up 50 goals for the season. Scoresby quickly replied but in the last 5 minutes we lifted our intensity. Froud kicked another – we then missed a couple and when Greig goaled after the siren we led by 4 points with the wind in the last quarter. At ¾ time we led 11-16 to 12-7. Ross had a great quarter.
We kicked 5-7 to 4 behinds in the final term. Looking back Scoresby spent all their tickets late in the 3rd quarter. Froud goaled to bring up 50 for the year. When goals came from Greig with two, Papillo and Cotchett the game was over and we had secured 4th spot on the ladder. From 4th we can now dictate our own finals destiny. Better players for the half were Ross Froud, Greig, Mendes, Stephen, Mullett and Millhouse
Goalkickers – Greig 6, Froud 5, Cotchett 2 and singles to Nummy, McKernan and Papillo.
Best Players – Ross, Cotchett, Mendes, Mullett, Froud, Stephen, Greig, Henley, Millhouse and Nummy.
Possessions – Mullett and Stephen 30, Cotchett 28, Henley 24, Mendes 23 and 20 each to Ross, Nummy and Bardon.
Ross and Greig each took 12 marks.
1% - Mendes 12 and 10 each to Stephen, Nummy, Papillo and Mullett with McCarthy 8.
Coach’s Comments – A great finish to the game – we outplayed them. They had a fair dinkum crack – you dug deep again in the last quarter.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 13-6-84 def SCORESBY 10-9-69
A terrific win as Scoresby were 10-3 and we were 3-10. Tom Davidson came in for his first game of the year. The signs were good earlt as we led 4-2 to 2-1 at quarter time. Goals came from Caneva, Rosewarne, M.Stewart and a rare gem from captain Illott.
Illott rewrote the record books by kicking his second goal in a match. Davidson goaled via Rogneda then Bull goaled via Davidson. The Eagles were well on top but near the break Scoresby kicked 2 late goals to cut or lead at ½ time to 19 points. Better players for the half were M.Stewart with 17 possessions, Illott, Cameron, Debney, Bull and McInerney with 11 possessions.
We extended our lead in the 3rd term by kicking 5 goals to 3. Caneva kicked 2 with singles to Davidson, Cameron and Rosewarne. Both Cameron and Debney were playing their best games for the year. Davidson will benefit from the hit out. At ¾ time we led 12-6 to 8-5.
They kicked 2-4 to 1 goal in the last quarter but we always had them at arm’s length. Ryan kicked our only goal. A well deserves win by 15 points. Better players for the half were M.Stewart, Whitchell, Jones, Rogneda, Debney and Cameron.
Goalkickers – Caneva 3 with 2 each to Illott, Davidson and Rosewarne and singles to Ryan, Cameron, Bull and M.Stewart.
Best players – M.Stewart with 32 possessions, Cameron, Rogneda, Illott, Debney, Whitchell and McInerney.
Coach’s Comments – 4 really strong quarters of footy – I could not be more pleased for you blokes. A fantastic win – well done.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
SCORESBY 19-13-127 def VERMONT 5-12-42
An even first quarter against the team 2nd on the ladder. They kicked the first 2 goals but we replied through Johnson and Humphrey. At ¼ time we led 2-3 to 2-2.
They smashed us with the wind in the 2nd term kicking 8-1 to 1-5. Our only goal came from Vasbinder as they got their goals too easily – we had no backline pressure. At half time they led 10-4 to 3-7. Better players for the half were Geraghty, Barry-Murphy, Checkley, Humphrey and Vasbinder.
It was one goal each in the 3rd term with our goal coming from Murphy. I noted it was a more even quarter by our boys but our delivery into our forward line was poor and we were continually outmarked. At ¾ time they led 11-6 to 4-10.
The last quarter was an absolute disaster – an absolute capitulation as they slammed on 8 unanswered goals. Sonsie who took a hard knock early in the match kicked a late goal. It was a hammering after we held our own for 2 of the 4 quarters. Better players for the half were Geraghty, Cooper, Barry-Murphy and Ferres.
Goalkickers – Singles to Murphy, Humphrey, Johnson, Vasbinder and Sonsie.
Coach’s Best Players – Cooper, Ferres, Johnson, Gabrial, Pretto and Geraghty.
Coach’s Comment – Disappointing.
