Under 10's Gold
Round 14 saw the Emu Lions U 10 Golds at Shaw Park to challenge the strong running Emu Lions Maroons.
What a great club we have where we can move "home" grounds and still have such a great day with a fantastic club atmosphere! Thanks to all the committee who no doubt had to do alot of running around in their own time to arrange everything.
The game was everything it lived up to be with both teams playing the game in a good spirit and everyone on the sideline cheering on some entertaining footy.
The U 10 Golds started the game really well and I think had the Maroons a bit worried. They certainly knew they were in for a contest when the young Gold's came in at half time with the lead! In the end though the Maroons had a bit too much fire power and secured the win.
One of the hardest running Gold's on the day was young Tom Holburn who came up from Auskick for his first game of "senior" footy. Tom inspired his team mates with his all heart effort.
Well done to Bailey for his Player of the Match effort and also Jesse for his leadership as Captain on the day.
One of the highlights of the game was when the Maroons and Golds all came together to sing the club song at the end of the contest.
Congratulations also to Bailey, Jesse and Shamous who went on to play their debut games in the U 12's and helped secure a memorable win against Rooty Hill.
Under 12's Black
This week under sunny skies at the Lions “temporary” home ground at Shaw Park, the under 12’s black came up against the determined Hawkesbury Saints. The Lions day started off with a dampener, losing Mitch Andrews in the first 5 minutes with a leg injury which kept him out of the rest of the game. However the Lions were still able to control the 1st quarter. After a flurry of behinds they finally scored their first goal after a great shepherd from Tiarne allowed Bryony to mark on the boundary who in turn directed a beautiful pass to Jake at the top of the square. Jake put the ball through the centre sticks to cap off a great team goal.
1st quarter Lions 1.6.12 to Saints 0.0.0
The Saints came out in the second quarter determined to make a mark on this game, but the Lions had other ideas. The Lions defence led by Tim Thomas still feeling the effects of the flu and Leon Kaltenbacher were performing gallantly. Joel Walsh was in everything, in one passage of play laying three tackles one after the other all of which stopped the Saints players in their tracks. Josh King was moved from defence to attack and immediately came up with the Lions second goal of the game. Lachlan “Freddie” Corbett was playing a blinder at centre half forward with Jake Stevens constantly driving the ball out of the centre. Jack Noble had a run in the ruck and was able to float forward and kick a lovely goal from 35m on the run.
2nd quarter Lions 3.6.24 to 1.3.9
The third quarter saw the Saints defence crumble to “GIRL POWER”. Bryony Corless & Tiarne Kerr were both creating havoc with each scoring a goal and setting up another for Jack Noble. Bryden Filce was again moved to full back after Tim finally gave in to illness and performed well, stopping a number of Saints attack on goal.
3rd quarter Lions 6.8.44 to Saints 2.6.18
The final term saw the return of Tim Thomas to the field at full forward and it wasn’t too long before he had kicked his first. A short time later it was again bad news for the Lions with Jake Stevens carried from the ground clutching his right knee. The Lions only other goal went to a much deserved Joel Walsh who had played his best game of the season so far.
Final scores Lions 8.11.59 to Saints 3.9.27
Thanks must go to Hayden Perry who played up from the U10’s and was thrown into a number of different positions covering for injured players.
Goals: Jack Noble 2, Jake Stevens, Josh King, Bryony Corless, Tiarne Kerr, Joel Walsh & Tim Thomas 1.
Krispy Kreme Award: Leon Kaltenbacher
Dominos: Joel Walsh & Lachlan Corbett.
Under 16's
Under an unseasonal warm sunny sky, the Under 16 Lions played an actual scheduled game at Greygums Oval against the always determined Penrith Swans. Again the Lions were missing quite a few players with Jordan Campbell, Blake Daenell, Michael Kerr, Tom Noble and newcomer Ashley Nicholls, all missing. After playing a tough game at our temporary home ground Shaw Park, under 14 players Chris Nolan and Jeremy Rix had a run and were particularly effective in the last quarter. Tim Wade returned to his expert role as Goal Umpire, while the evergreen Paul Devlin “glided” around the boundary. Nick Hocking and Tom Kelly assisted Bob “Get them going…” Mitchell and Glen Stevens and John “there isn’t a job I can’t do…” Rix - holding the coaches board. With supporters’ right up the hill, all was set for a great game of AFL football.
The first few minutes was a bit off a “to-and-fro” affair across the centre, but then David won a free kick for getting “creamed” in the back. He kicked long to the goal square for Ben to take the first of many great marks and then he goaled easily. Shortly afterwards, the ball was bouncing around the Lions forward line with no one able to break free. Rick picked up the ball and snapped at goal from 25m out to bring up the Lions second 6-pointer. With good structure on the Swans part and bit of laziness on the Lions part, the swans scored 2 good goals and a couple of points to hit the lead. Towards the end of the quarter, an umpire’s call resulted in the Swans third goal and the week off from the school holidays looked like breaking the Lions winning streak. It was the Lions 2 – 5 – 17 to the Swans 3 – 4 – 22.
The second quarter saw a goal after some funny kicking with David dribbling a ball towards goal and Alex H. getting his shin to the ball to make sure it was a goal. Alex H. was in the action again shortly after showing his pace to run into an open goal which he did kick properly. A series of good passes down the right wing finished with Ben kicking a great pass to Grant. Grant kicked a great 40m goal. Nick Adams, who was having a great game at centre, received a free kick and he booted the ball long to the pocket. While most players had given the ball up to go over the boundary, Rick was rewarded for his “never-say-die” chasing and ran the ball across the face of goal and dribbled it through for the Lions 4th goal of the quarter. At the next centre bounce, Nick punched long to Jackson who ran, steadied and then kicked a 50+metre goal to really show the Lions dominance. Finishing some great long passes down the field Ben took a great mark over his shoulder in the goal square to kick his second for the game. The swans scored a goal to go into the long break behind, 8 – 8 – 54 to 4 – 6 – 30.
The third quarter began with the Lions continuing on the same way with a long cross goal kick which Dan marked hard up against the boundary. Somehow Dan managed to slot the ball through the “big sticks” to kick his first goal. Again after some good roving with a stoppage down in our forward fifty, Ben scored his third goal of the game. After collecting an opposition players head in the side of his knee, Nick went down in the centre – and stayed down. After calling for the ambulance and the stretcher with an unknown leg injury, the sides gathered at each end as every body including coaches, runners, and first aid “experts” eventually got Nick off the ground. It was later learnt that Nick “probably” hyper extended his knee and suffered some soft tissue damage that may see him miss the next game. At the recommencement of play, the Swans took advantage of a “what do we do now...” Lions and scored 3 quick goals. The Lions finally composed themselves kicking long to Ben who played on and scored his second goal of the quarter. At the final break, the Lions led 11 – 8 – 74 to 7 – 7 – 56.
After being called to get back to basics and finish the game strongly, the Lions really put the Swans to the sword. After a long kick to Ben’s pocket, his tackling scored a free kick which allowed him to kick his 5th goal for the game. Rick roved off feet to score his 3rd goal. Unselfishly, Ben hand passed to Brayden to score his first goal of the game. After an accurate pass from David, Rick kicked his 4th goal of the game. Finally, Jeremy playing in the pocket gave a nice tap on to Dan who goaled with half a minute to spare. The hooter sounded with the ball again going into the Lions forward line and the score board showing the Lions victorious 16 – 7 – 107 to the Swans 7 – 8 – 50.
With his great running and accurate kick passes through the centre, Martin Pope got the Dominoes award, while Alex H. will enjoy a hot chocolate and a doughnut at Krispy Kremes for his solid display. Other players to get a notable mention were Brayden Wilson, Mark Myhill, Shaun Stevens, and a very determined Luke Crebbin. We now go on to play Blue Mountains Kangaroos at our temporary home ground – Shaw Park, next Saturday. We hope to see you all there at our rather “picturesque” AFL ground in the middle of Cambridge Park. (UBD Reference Map 164 G-11.)
