Round 13 saw the Goannas road trip continue, with trips to Rosedale Oval and Mahoney Park.
The Under 18’s kicked off the day at Rosedale, and were extra determined to put on a great show of Goannas football against Moorebank Sports. The last meeting between the 2 sides was a very physical affair, and this was no different. Despite going down, the boys showed tremendous spirit and gave the Moorebank boys a real run for their money, and will look to carry this momentum into their match next week against Manly. Ryan Johnston led from the front with a BOG performance, and Scotty Nolan showed the experience he has gained from his recent matches with the seniors. Jye Brennan, Blake McFarlane and Jarryd Smith also performed strongly, and Ethan Dean played well in his first match back from injury.
Division 4 came into the game full of confidence after their big win last week. They carried that momentum into the first half of the game, restricting Moorebank and were in with a shot at half time, trailing by 19 points. The second half did not quite follow the same lines, with Moorebank’s fitness showing through and the boys were left with a final score that did no justice to their performance. Ben Allen was his usual dominant self, and was well supported by Nathaniel Fennell and Trevor Goddard. Andrew Gulbis put in a performance that is showing he is blowing off the cobwebs after missing the first half of the season while Matt Martland also played very well.
Division 3 took the field with a number of key players missing and had a number of Under 18 players back up. These boys aqquitted themselves very well and whilst the result did not go the teams way, the fact that a number of the younger brigade were able to get a taste of seniors footy will bode well for the future of the club. Sal Abdulatif was the best on ground and tried hard all day in defence, and was well supported down there by Lee Nolan, Shannon Altorjay and John Mannion. Adam Townsend continued his mid-season form streak, and Jack Davey showed why we prefer to see him in the Goannas blue and gold instead of the umpires strip!
Division 2 were looking for 4 wins in a row when they took to the field against Balmain. Last week’s physical encounter had taken its toll, with a number of key players missing for this game. Thankfully it did not seem to affect the boys, as they came out and were blistering in the opening half, kicking 9 goals to one to ensure the win. The momentum continued into the third quarter, but for the second week in a row the boys finished the game with 17 as injuries took their toll. The fact the team had only 2 on the bench for the first 3 quarters and none for the last is a testament to the resolve and fitness of the group. Anthony Bishop was the best on ground, and must have gone close to racking up a club record for possessions. Tom Parsons and Sireli Fifita were dominant on the wings and ran hard all day. Shaun Costello had another excellent game and bagged another 3 goals, while Andrew Munns and Tony Mance controlled the backline superbly.
