SENIORS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 17-13-115 def EAST RINGWOOD 10-10-70
A bitterly cold day at Vermont with a strong cross breeze. We have now won our last 5 matches and have moved to 4th on the ladder on percentage. In came Pisano for his first game along with Henderson, Dore and Johnson. Out through injury were Rushton, Morse, Stewart and Cullen – three of those formed our back half.
We kicked to the non scoring end in the first term and the early signs were good. Greig again kicked first goal via Bardon. We controlled the play for 15 minutes but the Roos eventually kicked 3 goals before ¼ time – one from a dubious free kick against Millhouse. Despite kicking to the non scoring end we entered inside 50 metres 19-12. At ¼ time they led 3-4 to 1-5.
We kicked 8 goals to 1 in the second quarter. McLure, Greig and Froud each kicked two with singles to Mullett and a wonderful roll along the ground goal by Stephen. Mendes was fantastic at the footy, Ross was good in the ruck, McLure was good up forward and generally around the ground. Millhouse was solid in defence and our on ballers were getting plenty of the footy. At ½ time we led 9-7 to 4-7. Better players for the half were Mendes, Millhouse, Henley, McLure, Ross, Greig, Mullett and Bardon despite his turnovers.
Both sides kicked 4-3 in the 3rd quarter. Nummy kicked two with singles to Greig and Mullett. Mendes was again outstanding and first gamer Pisano was doing what he does best in and under – his tackling was an example. At ¾ time we led 13-10 to 8-10.
We kicked 4 goals to 2 in the final term. Froud kicked 2 with singles to Greig and Bardon. Better players for the half were Mendes, Henley, Ross, Millhouse, Mullett Dore and Pisano. The Eagles with a nice comfortable win by 45 points.
Goalkickers – Greig 4, Froud 4 with 2 each to McLure, Mullett and Nummy and singles to Stephen, Bardon and Dore.
Best Players – Mendes, Henley, Millhouse, Ross, Stephen, Mullett and McLure.
Possessions – Mendes 34, Stephen 33, Henley 32, Bardon 24, Mullett 23, Cotchett and Nummy 22 and Greig 21.
1% - Pisano 10, Henley 9, Nummy 8 McCarthy, McLure and Waller 7 and Ross 6.
Millhouse had 17 possessions and took 7 marks while Ross had 14 possessions and 30 hit outs.
Coach’s Comments – A very good team effort and it was good to turn the tables on them. A big credit to the 4 players who came in – they all contributed.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
EAST RINGWOOD 9-10-64 def VERMONT 9-9-63
We led all day except for the last 60 seconds of the game to go down by a heartbreaking one point. We kicked 3 goals to 2 in the first quarter. Rosewarne kicked 2 and Siakavelis booted one. We led at ¼ time 3-5 to 2-1.
It was one goal each in the 2nd quarter. Caneva kicked a beauty on the run. Better players for the half were Rogneda, Bull, T.Bird and Jones.
When Rosewarne kicked his third and Siakavelis his second just after half time the signs were good. All of a sudden the Roos lifted their rate and quickly replied. Late in the quarter the momentum swung back our way when Bull kicked 2 goals before ¾ time. At the last change we led 8-8 to 5-8.
The last quarter began with Whitchell applying a terrific tackle. The Roos goaled but when Caneva kicked a long goal into the wind we still led by 18 points. The Roos kicked the nest two goals as we led by 5 points but with the one minute sign on the scoreboard they goaled again to hit the front for the first time in the match.
Better players for the half were Rogneda, McDonald, Stewart, Whitchell and Siakavelis.
Goalkickers – Rosewarne 3 with 2 each to Siakavelis, Bull and Caneva.
Coach’s Best Players – Rogneda, Stewart, Whitchell, Siakavelis and L.Davis.
Coach’s Comments – We were beaten by wrong decision making in the last quarter.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
EAST RINGWOOD 12-13-85 def VERMONT 7-8-50
The colts were up against the top undefeated side. We played really well in the first quarter and looked the better side. McKernan led the way with a goal along with Pretto. At ¼ time we led 2-2 to 0-3.
The Roos kicked 3 goals to 2 in the second term. Our tackling and intensity was great and we had plenty of the ball. McKernan continued to be outstanding with both he and Murphy kicking goals. At ½ time we led 4-2 to 3-4. Better players for the half were McKernan, Geraghty, Humphrey, Checkley and Gartland.
S.Williams kicked a quick goal in the 3rd term with the Roos replied. Baird goaled via Murphy but East Ringwood booted the next two and when they kicked another because no one was willing to punch in the goal square they hit the front. Our intensity dropped off the planet. At ¾ time they led 7-7 to 6-7.
If we thought the intensity disappeared midway through the third term – it disappeared completely in the last quarter as the game became oneway traffic. The Roos slammed on 5 goals before McKernan kicked a belated goal near the end.
Better players for the half were – McKernan, Gabrial, Checkley and Vasbinder.
Goalkickers- McKernan 3 with singles to Pretto, Murphy, Baird and S.Williams.
Coach’s Best Players – McKernan, Vasbinder, S.Williams, Geraghty, Gabrial and Checkley.
Coach’s Comments – It’s all about intensity – when they lifted we couldn’t go with them. We didn’t play to our full potential. We will have to have a good look in the mirror.
