Round 12 of the QAFL Velocity Sports Cup will provide an opportunity for the Tradelink Western Magpies to register its first win of the season against Broadbeach at Merrimac Oval 2pm on Saturday. Both clubs put in creditable performances last week with the Magpies putting together three good quarters against Labrador before fading in the last while Broadbeach had a similar scenario against Southport.
The Magpies have not traveled well down the M3 at all this year suffering heavy losses to Labrador and Southport and they will be hell bent on turning that around and producing the type of football they have played at home on the road. A key indicator that the Magpies are getting closer to notching up their first win for 2009 is that over the last month the Magpies line up from week to week has begun to settle and there potentially could be only 1 change to the Magpies line up going into this game.
That change could be significant one for the clubs future with Chris Hunt a Torres Strait Islander who came to the Magpies via the Cape York Crusaders and the Country Kookaburras through an AFL QLD scholarship at St. Peters College has in the last month started to put in performances in the U/18 and Reserve teams indicate he may be ready to fulfill his enormous potential. Hunt has skill, pace and athleticism topped off with an X factor of unpredictability which will provide the Pies with something toward making up for the loss of the injured Richard Wenham.
In great form is Chris Judson who was in everything last week against Labrador in an outstanding performance and he was amongst the Magpies best against Broadbeach earlier in the year. Val Pope has been building in the last month and played undoubtedly his best game for the season and Coach Paul Grentell will be looking for Pope to take it to another level this week. Josh Barton also worked very hard down forward showing great hands in taking some quality contested marks. Luke Scott, Drew Mitchell, Sean Mewing, Todd Dunn, Matt Dillon and Mark Hamill in rotation with Ed McDonnell have settled as a unit in defense and are keeping the opposition forwards in check as well as providing rebound and run creating deeper penetration into the Magpies forward line.
In short the Magpies are ready to take a victory.
Squad is attached.
