We went in to the game against Banyule with confidence after our 5 goal away win earlier on the season. Once again we had to take control of the game early and this was
made a little easier with Banyule only able to field 17 players. Despite being one short they still managed to put great pressure on in the midfield and our forward line but we were able to use the extra man to advantage coming out of defence. The star early on was once gain Dan Tibaldi with some great clearance work and Dan Di Bartlolomeo lively in the forward line. However in general we were 2nd to the ball and it was only through our greater talent that we took a 21 point lead into the first break. The 2nd quarter was once again a tight affair in general play with our delivery into the forward line poor and our disciple level dropping. The lead at half time was a comfortable 39 points but we knew we could have played much better.
In the 3rd quarter we were back to some better form with some great running through the middle of the ground. Nat Tomecek and Joe Urbano were the keys in setting this up with effective handball and running. Our forwards were benefitting from the better delivery with us attacking through the middle. In particular Dan Massarotti was starting to hold his grabs and Tom Feher was well on top of his opponent as we extended the lead to 70 points.
There was an opportunity to post a huge win with a big last quarter. However, to Banyule’s credit they did not give in and kept their competitive spirit up to the final
siren. Our focus was very attacking with too many players pushing forward. While we had a very productive 6 goal quarter the drift away from the defensive roles
gave the 4 goals as well. Anyway, while we know we can play even better than this we will always be satisfied with a 14 goal win and 40 scoring shots. Well
done to our newest recruit, Chris McKeown, on playing in his first game in our colours and joining the song at the end. This is the 2nd win in a row and with
winnable games coming up in the next few weeks we are heading into July with confidence. The first of these is against Bulleen Templestowe next week at
2.00pm. Away games are a big challenge in Under 19’s and we will need to be switched on for this one.
After the match the players were keen to hear how Tom Woodman went in his Senior debut and all were very pleased to hear that he acquitted himself well in a great victory over Prahran well done Tom!
Cheers,
Pete
