The aftermath of last weeks muddy slog was that despite mainly fine weather through the week, our Round 11 matches had to be moved from Charles McLaughlin. This left us in the unique scenario of playing our home games against East Coast and Norwest at Bruce Purser, the Eagles home ground!
Division 4 had a hard task ahead of them taking on the Jets. The team showed great play in patches, however against a well drilled Norwest side it was not enough to get them over the line, in yet another game where the score does not reflect the effort that the boys put in for the game.
Peter Zuvela continued a strong debut season with a best on ground performance, with Ben Allen and Damien McDonald also continuing to produce the great form they have all year. David Stevens and Matt Martland were also standouts, with Gary Sentance also shining in his first match back.
The job was not any easier for the Division 3 team against the same opposition. Despite the task ahead of them, the team came out and showed terrific endeavour and again, despite the result, put in what was perhaps one of their best performances of the season. After a break with the bye next week, the boys will look to build on this performace and the first win is not far away!
The highlight of the day was club cult hero Adam ‘Wolverine’ Townsend kicking a goal which had the fans on their feet screaming. Damien Vassallo continued his fantastic debut season, with Shannon Altorjay, Dane Ramsey and Jason Wilson also continuing their excellent seasons whilst Brad Byrnes was strong in defence all day.
Following on from their great win last week, the Division 2 boys were looking to build up momentum for the 2nd half of the season, in what was the first meeting between the teams since the old Baulko days. The Goannas got off to an absolute flyer, kicking 7 goals in the first quarter and keeping the opposition scoreless, and then repeated the dose in the 2nd quarter to sew up the match.
At half time the challenge was laid down to finish the job, something which had not been done as often as it should have been in the past, and the boys responded in style. After conceding the first goal of the third quarter, the Goannas slammed home the next 11 goals of the game, and did not allow the Eagles another score, to run out convincing 160 point winners, the biggest win for the club in some time. This would have been soothing news for coach Troy Balzan, who left the game early in the 2nd quarter with a broken nose.
In a great all round team performance, Greg Adams was the stand out, kicking 6 goals and dominating around the ground with vice like hands. Luke Walsh also starred up forward with a bag of 8, whilst Shaun Costello, Mark Hill, John Maniscalco and Brett Rizzo were also dominant all around the ground all game.
