This Saturday in its home game v Labrador The Western Magpies AFC will be raising funds to support 18 year old Shannon Smith who suffered horrific facial injuries representing the Magpies in an U/18 game last Sunday. As a result of his injuries Shannon requires reconstructive surgery on Monday and this weekend all Western Magpies players and officials will wear red arm bands to show their support for Shannon and his family.
Shannons family Mum Julie and Dad Bruce along with his younger brother and two sisiters had travelled to Brisbane last week to cellebrate Shannons 18th birthday on Thursday and had planned to return to Melbourne on Tuesday. Shannons injuries and hospitalisation has thrown their world into turmoil not being able to return home to work and with no accomodation booked for the extended stay has put huge emotional and financial stress on the family.
AFL QLD assisted by sourcing and funding 7 nights accomodation for the Smiths at an inner city hotel which was able to reduce some of the worry so they could concentrate on caring for their son.
This Saturday the Western Magpies AFC calls on all its supporters, families and past players to get to the home game against Labrador and donate generously to support Shannon and his family in the tough road to recovery that lay ahead. Shannons U/18 team mates will be around the ground with collection tins taking donations no matter how big or small.
