Ist Grade V Belconnen Sat 27th June
It was always going to be a tough day for the boys this weekend coming up against the top of the table Belconnen at Greenway. It didn’t help our cause when our co-skipper Craig Healy was ruled out through injury.
The boys fought hard for the whole and showed that we were competitive with the topside in the competition. Matt Bernasconi was solid down back taking a lot of marks and using the ball well coming back out, James McCabe continued his promising form again this week showing a lot of desperation over the footy and making an impact running out of our back line. Adam Sangstan had his first game back in the seniors for a while and was impressive with his tackling pressure and presence on the field. Another bloke back into senior footy was Nathan Costigan who looked solid down forward as a target kicking 4 goals. Toby Richards played his debut game for first grade this weekend and played well especially defensively making a lot of tackles.
We lost two of our best in Ashley Pocock and Ben Cleaver due to injuries picked up in the game, which made it difficult playing with just a two man bench for majority of the second half. Despite this we were able to get within fifteen points of Belconnen until they ran away in the last ten minutes to win by around 9 goals.

Reserves v Belconnen
It was a disappointing result for the Reserves who went down by 9 goals to Belconnen. Following the great win against competition leaders Queanbeyan the previous week the Reserves were looking to consolidate and make it two in a row. The inconsistency and intensity were not there for the whole game and Belconnen came “more” ready to play than the Hawks.
Despite a poor first half the Hawks competed very well in the second half and had as many scoring opportunities as its opponents after the main break.
James Brown and Cal Graham, both back from injury, needed the run and the four quarter efforts from Lachlan Nevett, Dave Nolen, Marc Maloney, Liam Greenwell, Tim Cleaver and Charlie Prowse were very good. Cody Kickett, Sean Wilkinson and Sam Trevillian again demonstrated they are up to senior footy with consistent efforts.
We look forward to the next challenge against Eastlake.

U 18's V Belconnen
The Hawks 18’s came into Saturdays match brimming with confidence but knowing we would face a tough task against one of the form sides of the competition. The first half went goal for goal as first Belconnen hit the front then Tuggeranong wrestled back the advantage to take a 1 goal lead into half time. The Hawks came out of half time full of run and had control of the match but just couldn’t convert their opportunities, which left the door ajar for Belconnen to kick two late goals and come into 3 quarter time only 3 points down. The first couple of goals in the final term were always going to be pivotal and unfortunately the Hawks ran out of legs and were over run in the final quarter. A disappointing end result for the Hawks but still plenty of positives to take from the match. Best players for the day were Sam Trevillian across half back, Ben Symons with his run through the middle, Sean Wilkinson and Codie Kickett through the middle and up forward and Matt Graham for his efforts firstly down back then up forward.

Women V Eastlake Sun 28th June
The Girls put up a great performance against Eastlake and played 4 quarters of consistant footy, but it wasn't enough. Unfortunately the team suffered a few injuries including Ange who has re injured her ankle. Unfortunately this drops the girls back into 3rd place on the ladder but will still see them play finals

3rd's V Woden Sun 28th June
The Third Grade met the Woden Blues at Stirling Oval on Saturday afternoon. Along with the senior grades, the Thirds were feeling the effect of injury and absence with some key players missing from action. This provided the opportunity for Chief to play in one of his more favourite positions, the Ruck which he did well all day. With Chief in the middle of the ground young James Creech became the lone target for the Third grade and he did the job well winning the one on one contest coming out of the goal square. Unfortunately for Creechy, the delivery was not always at its best however he was able to convert on two occasions (not quite the 15 his counterpart converted down the other end, but that is another story). With the team structure out the door it became a game of skill and knowledge and due to the majority of the Hawks still learning the game it was again a case of stick to what they know and don’t worry about the scoreboard. The Hawks were let down with their inability to clear the packs with their kick outs which lead to easy turnovers and more points for the opposition.
The last quarter saw a position change that produced some of the performances of the game when young rookie Paul Thompson was moved onto the ball and had an immediate impact winning the majority of the ball out of the centre. It was pleasing to see his team mates acknowledge his endeavour when he was awarded the players player award. The standout performer for the day was ‘veteran’ Jeremy Miller who had a hand in setting up almost all the teams goals and was even rewarded with one of his own. For a team that has been beaten by 356 points over the past 3 weeks the Hawks certainly don’t show signs of falling apart at the seams and turning on each other (as witnessed at the game when the Blues almost had an all in brawl with themselves!). They are supportive of each other and continue to learn new things each week which will only go to building a strong side for next season. With players like Ross Henningsen, who came to the aid of newby James Farrell after coping a wayward elbow to the face and Martin De Smet who is like a wound up spring, the Third Grade down at Hawkland looks to be in good shape for the future.
