The Dandenong Southern Stingrays bounced back from their biggest loss for the year to record their biggest win for the year when they completely destroyed the Bendigo Pioneers by 143 points in cool and clear conditions at Shepley Oval, Dandenong in the Round 12 TAC Cup clash last Saturday.
With both teams without their Under 18 Nationals players, the Pioneers were further weakened when one player could not take the field because of illness and losing three others by ¾ time with injuries. Despite this the Stingrays were clinical in their dismantling of the Pioneers and could have been further in front early in the game if they had of kicked straighter. At quarter time the Stingrays lead 4-4 to 1-1 with the Stingrays backline well on top of the Pioneers forwards and not giving them much of the ball.
The second term was where the game opened up and the Stingrays turned possession into scores. 5 goals to 1 had the Stingrays on top and in front by 51 points at half time. Coach Graeme Yeats demanded his players work as a team and be professional with their approach to all aspects of the game. Jarryd Amalfi, Dylan Roberton and James Hallahan were unstoppable in the back half and Myles Pitt, Will Petropolous and Luke Parker were looking dangerous in the forwardline.
The second half was a bit of a procession with the Stingrays piling on 17 goals to 2 to vastly improve their percentage. Luke Parker kicked 7 goals, 6 after half time to go with his 25 possessions, Will Petropolous kicked six with 23 possessions and Myles Pitt kicked 5 and racked up 23 possessions at CHF as the Stingrays cantered to the easiest of wins.
Next Sunday, July 5th is another home game in the TAC Cup for the Stingrays against the Dennis Pagan coached Northern Knights at 2.00pm. At a National Under 18 level the Vic Country had a good win over NT by 8 goals with Ryan Bastinac once again in the best and Vic Metro fell across the line with a goal with 20 seconds left on the clock to win by that margin against Qld.
