Saturday’s triple header against Aquinas was always going to be a huge day for club as it was the first time all 3 sides have played on the same day this year. It was terrific to watch the vibrancy of the U/19’s in their demolition of the Aquinas unders. Our reserves then continued the trend they have displayed all year with a comprehensive display of hard running football to record a 100 point win. The seniors competing with Aquinas for the Simon Strike Mark Wilkinson cup in the late match were able to make it 3 from 3 when we completed a tough day for Aquinas winning in a canter by 109 points.
Aquinas were the better of the starters with their young runners finding space due to a lack of pressure from our onballers. It was apparent however that Aquinas were going to struggle to match our tall forwards especially after their CHB Williams went down after a heavy collision with Mirabella & Cunningham midway through the first term. But we went into the first break 3 goals adrift of our opponents and the crowd scratching their heads!!
The 2nd quarter started with much higher work rate form our players and we were able to shut down the Bloods runners and take the initiative early. We were all over Aquinas as we posted an 8 goal quarter to go into half time. We had multiple goal scorers and this really stretched the Aquinas defense. Our runners Scannell, Stafford, Marchesi & Janson were opening up the game and finding key forward targets in Mirabella and Daou. Most pleasing was our team work and sharing of goal scoring opportunities especially from Daou who laid off 3 handballs close to goal that resulted in majors.
We spoke about the importance of restricting the Bloods as they kicked with wind in the third quarter. However we continued to attack hard and 4 goals in the first 5 minutes put the game beyond Aquinas’s reach. Woods was brilliant in this quarter kicking 4 of his 7 goals and really setting up a game winning margin as we outscored them 6 goals to 2 against a 3 goal wind.
The last quarter turned into a parade of Friars goals as we piled on 10 goals with great run and accurate goal kicking! It was a tough day for the Aquinas boys but I really admired the way their senior team fronted up in the rooms after the game and copped it on the chin, goodness knows we have been in that position many times over the past 2 years. The importance of holding heads high in adversity is so important to a club as it is easy to be there when times are good, I’m sure this augers well for the bloods as they develop their young team.
Scannell & Stafford continued their stellar seasons along with Woodsy who is showing us now what many of us knew he was capable of, Jarrod Marchesi again was devastating on his wing!! I could mention every player in this report as the load was well shared. As a team we are really developing strongly our team culture of being predictable to each other is showing great rewards. Add our desire to help and protect team mates and we have a great and exciting mix that will continue to develop throughout the year!
Cheers, Feuta
