MORNINGSIDE v ASPLEY
Sunday 28 June, Esplen Oval, 2pm
The last time these teams met a month ago, Morningside generated 50 scoring shots on a wet day and won by 127 points.
Their
lead-in to the re-match could not be more different – Morningside
emerged triumphant but battered and bruised after a high intensity win
over the NT Thunder in Cairns, while Aspley had the weekend off.
That
might affect Aspley’s drive early as they look to shrug off some rust,
while the Panthers are playing with all the assurity of a team primed
for a serious premiership assault.
One of Aspley’s bugbears has been their inability to piece together four good quarters and they have battled to run out games.
The
Hornets have won just one of 20 second halves this season and
desperately need the return of goalkicking tall-and-small combination
Adrian Williams and Ben Weightman this weekend.
One
of the best battles of the game should be Aspley key defender Shaun
Tapp against Morningside ace Kent Abey, while young ruckman David Hill
should provide a keen contest against white-hot Panthers ruckman Jacob
Gough.
The
Panthers rotated their best players off the bench heavily two weeks ago
after many had participated in State games, and will likely do more of
the same with a key clash against Mt Gravatt looming.
However, the Hornets don’t appear to have the class to match a Morningside outfit that is searching for win No.9 in succession.
Midfield
maestros Paul Shelton and David Lillico have the rare ability to put
down the accelerator when it is really needed and stopping that duo
will be almost impossible.
