The Bears have reached the mid-season break around the Queen’s Birthday and are looking forward to a couple of weeks rest. Kenmore had a long pre season and in the process hunted around for a new coach to replace Hayden Ryan who was on the move for his career. The process had a number of applicants, all bringing something different to the club and in the end the committee settled with Ron Wolfe.
The off season also saw a number of new faces rock up at Chelmer, a handful from just over the hill at Western Magpies who were promoted to Velocity Cup but most from interstate. A couple of Irish lads in Shae and Lenny have also landed on the step bringing some gaelic skills with them and their love of a beer. Amongst the new faces were some familiar faces as well in Tim and Simon Plummer who haven’t played for Kenmore since 2003.
The start to the season was a washout with a bye and then rain for our first game, so come Rd 3 the Kenmore den was raring to go against 2008 Premiers, Wynnum. At the end of that game it was clear that the new playing group was far improved as they pushed Wynnum to lose by 3 points. The Reserves pushed all match for a close defeat as well and 2009 looked to be a promising start for the whole club.
Rd 4 brought Alex Hills and it proved a valuable win with the senior playing group bouncing back to record win number 1 for the season. This was followed with four in a row getting the Seniors off to a great start to the season including a great performance to record their first ever win in the local derby match against Uni.
This was followed with a win over Coorparoo. Then another first ever win against Yeronga to have the playing group full of confidence. But then the rain hit Brisbane again and a travelling Caloundra team got the points over the seniors in a low scoring dour affair in the wet.
The Reserves had struggled for a couple of weeks in a row with a humbling game at Uni through to getting rained out against Caloundra to be sitting near the bottom of the ladder.
Rd 9 got the Kenmore club on a bus bound for Caboolture with both teams striving to get back in the winners list. The Reserves were first off and after a slow start kicked away in the second quarter to lead by 5 goals. The halftime break was anything but bizarre with Kenmore getting two red cards while waiting in the sheds. Against the odds and playing short for 15 minutes saw the Reserves dig deep and outscore Caboolture and keep it going to get the first win on the board. Mick Gorman playing on ball was outstanding for the day getting forward to kick 5 goals as was Shea Quinn on the wing.
The Seniors had a slow start to the game as well but eventually kicked away thanks to some dominant work in the forward line by Tim Plummer kicking 8 goals before we all got back on the bus for a fun ride back home. Joycey wins the award for tiniest bladder only making it to Kedron before a resourceful mind and uncanny on/off ability put a smile back on his face.
Kenmore got back to the start of the second round of the comp with the Seniors well placed in 4th on the ladder while the Reserves were a bit further adrift hoping to turn things around from 8th spot.
