North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey will be a tough man to mark but Maroochy-Northshore Roos defender Peter Hay is said to be keen to give it a go.
Most weekends, Peter Hay marks an opponent whose footballing infamy is restricted to his club's inner sanctum and his own family.
Blokes who like to have a kick to blow off steam after braving the nine-to-five rat race.
But this Saturday, the Maroochy-Northshore Roos defender may be given the task of curbing the influence of a superstar who is perhaps better known for his off field exploits than those on it.
Palm Beach Currumbin confirmed to the Daily yesterday that North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey is a "90 per cent chance" of turning out for the club against the Roos in a Pineapple Hotel Cup clash at Gold Coast's Salk Oval this weekend.
Maroochy Northshore skipper Ryan White indicated Hay is the favourite to get the job of containing the controversial Carey, who played 272 AFL matches in a glittering career.
"There's a couple of blokes who could do it (mark Carey), but Peter Hay will probably have the first crack at him," White said yesterday.
"He's very keen to play on him, and it's going to be a great challenge for the team.
"It's pretty exciting to play against someone as high profile as Wayne Carey. He was one of my heroes growing up as a footy player.
Palm Beach Currumbin football manager Marty Gay said the man dubbed "The King" was keen to feature in the crucial top-of-the-table match.
"He trained last Thursday night, he trained last night (Tuesday) and he will be training tomorrow night (tonight)," Gay said yesterday. "At this stage, he is a 90% chance of playing.
"He's got a bit of a calf strain, but he's had some treatment and he's keen as mustard.
"Some of the young blokes in the team were a bit awestruck to begin with, but he's fitted in well.
Carey's likely appearance means there will be two AFL premiership winners on the field, with former Sydney Swan Ben Mathews in the Roos line-up.
According to Hay, the possibility of marking the man many consider to be the greatest centre half forward of all time isn't playing on his mind.
"There were rumours he might play for them at the start of the year, but I'll take it as any normal game," he said.
"It's a big deal but it's only one player, there's other players we have to watch.
"Hopefully his fitness isn't going to be all there yet and I'm looking forward to the opportunity if it comes along."
The Noosa Tigers are also due to play Palm Beach Currumbin two weeks later.
Unfortunately for Sunshine Coast fans hoping to catch the man dubbed 'Duck' in action, that match will also be played on the Gold Coast.
