SENIORS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 13-11-89 def LILYDALE 10-18-78
It was a typical winters day with no rain. In to the side came Papillo, Nummy, McLure and Vic Siciliano who was on a one match permit from Pt Melbourne. Out were Dore, Stewart, Webster who was again unavailable and Travis Bird who had exams. It was going to be a challenge against the top side who are rated by some good judges as the best in the competition.
It was a good start with early goals from Siciliano and Henley via Stephen. Mendes work rate was fantastic. Rushton was brave in defence backing into oncoming traffic. Stephen snapped a beauty but Lilydale replied with two goals to even up the quarter. At ¼ time we led 3-4 to 2-2.
It was lack lustre second quarter with Vermont shutting down their prime movers who have been starring in recent weeks. Lilydale added 2 goals while Greig goaled via Cotchett. Millhouse was playing at centre half back for the first time and was doing well. At ½ time Lilydale led 4-8 to 4-7. Better players for the half were Cullen, Ross, Mendes, Rushton, Bardon and Stephen.
We won the game in the third quarter with 3 early goals to Cotchett via Mendes, Froud via Mendes and Henley. Lilydale pulled one back but we replied through Greig via Papillo, Siciliano and Mullett. Our tackling and intensity was terrific despite playing wide and overusing handballs. As former football administrator Ron Joseph said to me after the game – you would be a top side if you were more direct. We went to a 5 goal lead when Stephen goaled but Lilydale kicked the last two to trail by 20 points at ¾ time. Vermont 11-8 to 7-12.
Lilydale had the scoring end in the last quarter and kicked the first 2 goals to get within 11 points. With 2 minutes to go and after withstanding many Lilydale forward thrusts Froud and Papillo goaled to seal the victory. Better players in the 2nd half were Ross, Mullett, Cullen, Mendes, Bardon, Rushton, Stephen and McLure.
Goalkickers – 2 each to Siciliano, Henley, Greig and Froud with singles to Cotchett, Papillo and Mullett.
Best Players – Ross, Stephen, Mendes, Cullen, Rushton, Bardon and Millhouse.
Coach’s Comments – It’s great to hear the song again. It was a fantastic team effort.
Possessions – Stephen 29, Mendes and Mullett 22, Ross 21, Bardon 20, Cullen and Cotchett 19 while Millhouse and Henley had 18.
1% - McCarthy 15, Morse, Mendes and Mullett 10, Stephen and Henley 8 each.

RESERVES FINAL SCORE
LILYDALE 14-10-94 def VERMONT 11-18-84
A big player turnover this week with 7 changes.
The reserves began well with the first 2 goals from Jones and Dressing but Lilydale kicked the next 3 to lead at ¼ time 3-1 to 2-4. Dore was effective early.
It was an even second term with Michael Stewart kicking 2 goals and Rosewarne booting one via Della’Aquilla. Della’Aquilla played only half the game after being instructed by his doctor – he was coming back from injury. Likydale kicked 3 goals for the term and at half time scores were level Lilydale 6-2 to 5-8. Better players for the half were Dore (Ist term only), M.Stewart, McInerney, Josh Davis and F.Stewart.
The highlight of the 3rd term was three brilliant tackles By Luke Pisano which resulted in free kicks. Lilydale kicked the first 2 goals before Debney goaled via Rosewarne. A bad over use of the ball turnover cost us a goal. We then missed 3 easy shots for goal before Pisano capped off a great quarter with a goal. Unfortunately, Lilydale kicked the last 2 goals to lead at ¾ time by 16 points.
When McInerney and Pisano goaled early in the final quarter it was certainly game on. More goals came from Tsindos via Pisano and Luke Davis but Lilydale responded with 3 more to hang on to a 10 point margin. Better players for the half were Pisano, McInerney, M.Stewart and J.Bird.
Goalkickers – M.Stewart and Pisano 2 each with singles to Dressing, Debney, McInerney, Tsindos, L.Davis, Rosewarne and Jones.
Coach’s Best Players – M.Stewart, Henderson, Pisano, McInerney, McDonald and Tsindos.
Coach’s Comments – The same things let us down today – wrong decisions made under pressure. It was disappointing to let that one slip as we were the better side.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 11-16-82 def LILYDALE 5-8-38
It was a must win game for the colts to stay in touch. During the week one of out best players Jacob Huisman sought a clearance to Knox whom we play next week. It was a good first quarter as we kicked 4 goals to 2. We should have been further infront except for some bad misses from close range. Goals came from Sam Williams who was marking strongly and others came from Geraghty, Castersen and McKernan. McKernan was leading by example and was in for a good game. At ¼ time we led 4-3 to 2-1.
We kicked the only 2 goals of the second quarter. Sonsie after a strong mark and Youssef from a tight angle. Woolard took one of the marks of the day. At half time we led 6-6 to 2-3. Better players for the half were – McKernan, Geraghty, Barry-Murphy and Humphrey.
In the 3rd term McKernan was outstanding but we failed to kick a goal instead we kicked 5 behinds. We had all the play but could not convert. Lilydale kicked a late goal but we controlled the game.
We kicked 5-5 to 2-1 in the last quarter. Sam Williams kicked 3 goals and took two very strong marks. Luke Johnson goaled on the run and Geraghty goaled via Quon. It was a good win by 44 points as we had 27 shots to 13 and 25 clearances to 7. Better players for the half were – McKernan, Sam Williams, Humphrey and Barry-Murphy.
Goalkickers – Sam Williams 4, Geraghty 2 and singles to Johnson, McKernan, Castersen,Youssef and Sonsie.
Coach’s Best Players – McKernan, Castersen, S.Williams, Checkley, Carrados and Johnson.
Coach’s Comments – We started to see a game plan today. Our running from behind and protection was terrific. The captain showed the way and we can take a leaf out of Castersen’s book. It was a great team effort – everyone came to play
