Under 10's Gold
Round 9 saw the mighty U 10 Golds travel to Cook Park to take on St Clair. With St Clair having 16 players available all 14 of our squad played the full 4 quarters. It was an entertaining game with the ball strongly contested by both teams and goals hard to come by.
The third quarter was very tight and some excellent Lions defence enabled us to hold our lead. Well done to Ryan O'Keeffe who saved a couple of St Clair shots on the line and impressed coach Zeona for the player of match honours.
Our 5 goals ended up being enough with the "goal sneak" Billy and Jordon each bagging doubles and Bailey who was full of running all game also securing a goal.
Well done Lions and as always there was plenty of support from all the parents ensuring the team continues to have such an enjoyable season.

This week the Lions travelled to Greygums Oval to play the Penrith Swans. It was a slow start to the game as neither side could gain an early advantage, although the Lions seemingly had greater possession of the ball. After a string of behinds to the Lions a strong lead and mark by Lachlan Corbett saw him kick truly for the only goal of the quarter.
¼ time scores: Lions 1.5.11 to Swans 0.0.0
The second was again a close one with the young Swans team scoring a goal of their own and showing the Lions that they were here to play. Some strong work around the packs from Mitch Andrews and Brayden Saint – Barry, and Jack Nobles lovely long kicks meant the ball was now starting to find its way into the Lions forward line more often, allowing Bryden Filce to show off his goal kicking skills with two goals for the quarter.
½ time scores: Lions 3.8.26 to Swans 1.0.6
The Lions were able to lift the intensity in the second half scoring 4 goals in third quarter and a further 3 in the last to come away with a well earned 70 point win. Lachlan Corbett played a great game at full forward today not for his 3 goals but the way in which he presented as a target and provided opportunities for the players around him. Tyler Robinson played an excellent game on the wing and Brayden Saint-Barry put in his best performance of the season so far especially when moved into the ruck. Grant Shipley played a fine game in defence. All in all this was a good team effort.
Final scores: Lions 10.16.76 to Swans 1.0.6
Goal Scorers: Lachlan Corbett 3, Bryden Filce 2, Joel Walsh 2, Jack Noble 2, Brayden Saint-Barry 1.
Krispy Kreme : Lachlan Corbett
Dominos: Tyler Robinson, Brayden Saint-Barry

Under 14's
The Lions came out refreshed today after a break last week and tackled the Hawkesbury Saints. Unfortunately, there was no joy on the scoreboard early on in the game with the Lions failing to register a score in the first quarter and only 1 goal, kicked by Jeremy Rix, in the second quarter. The Saints had kicked 6 goals by half time and opened a handy lead.
The Lions tried hard in the first half but could not get the results on the scoreboard. Pat Pope led the way in the backline and was well supported by Julian Borg, Nathan Milgate, Ben Foxall, Jeremy Hardy and Hugh Arnold. It was a tough day in the backline but the boys never gave up. The second quarter saw Jeremy Rix move into the ruck and he immediately had an impact and scored the Lions only goal for the day. Markus McDonagh was busy in the middle of the ground and repeatedly sent the Lions into attack. Blake Langer was used on the wing and as rover today and did a great job in both roles.
The half time break was welcome and the boys were already starting to tire on the big ground. The third quarter saw Adrian Boelhouwer and Chris Nolan continue their tireless efforts and all the Lions improved their workrate in the second half. Beau Dingemans was off the ground injured in the third quarter after clashing heads with Adrian but made a courageous comeback in the last quarter helping the Lions in the forward line. As a result of their efforts the Lions spent a lot of time in the forward line in the last quarter but could not register another goal on the scoreboard.
The Lions tried hard all day, right to the final siren, however the Saints played the better football on the day and deserved their win.
Awards: Chris Nolan, Pat Pope, Adrian Boelhouwer , Markus McDonagh
Goals: Jeremy Rix 1

After another week off due to the fact that we won’t become a republic, the Lions travelled south to the Monarch Oval near Macquarie Fields. The playing area has to be the biggest in the Sydney area – yes that includes the SCG and Telstra Stadium Homebush – Its Huge…! The Lions lined up without Brendan Redcliffe, trainer Bob Mitchell and recent best on ground star – Mark Myhill. While Nick Adams did himself and the team proud by turning a one game suspension for being yellow carded twice into a positive by travelling to Ingleburn and supporting his teamates. On this size ground, Tim Wade ran a marathon just to get to his familiar home between the posts while the GPS system on Boundary umpire Paul Devlin broke down just after half time because it doesn’t register zeros beyond the seventh decimal place! Lucky Paul kept going while everyone (and everything) else couldn’t! Having a feeling that the Lions may need some extra legs, coach Rix brought along under 14’s players Jeremy (the coaches son) Rix and Patrick Pope to join the team.
Campbelltown haven’t won a game so far this season, but the way they started the first quarter, this fact is hard to fathom. They won the opening centre and the Lions new they were in for a torrid afternoon. Shaun Stevens led the defensive effort again and by quarter time it was amazing they hadn’t scored a point let alone a goal. At the other end of the field we were having a hard time getting it up to our forward line with any consistency. Our first goal came from Dylan who kicked into space for Dan Kelly to pick up and straighten for goal. It was 1 – 3 to 0 – 0 at the break and coaches Rix and Stevens told the Lions ironically that this game ‘…won’t be an easy walk in the park’!
The second quarter saw the Lions start to stamp their authority in the area of team work and getting the ball to the right end. It also helped that Rick Ooms and Ben McGovern started to hold some marks and work together with the result being 3 goals to Ben often from a one – two effort with Rick. Rick picked up a goal himself while Dan picked up his second goal after a great mark in the forward pocket boundary by Blake Daenell who centred to Dan with good vision.
The second quarter had many interesting events besides the football with a fight right in front of the Lions coaching box that had one of the Campbelltown players threatening to get “their boys” onto our Jeremy and Rick. Despite the umpires not able to see or hear anything, it was the good efforts of the Campbelltown runners and the cool-heads of our players that the event didn’t end up more serious. In another first, the other Campbelltown runner seem to earn the ire of the senior umpire and was red-carded off the field after giving a way a penalty for “mouthing off” a few moments earlier. I am sure the video of the game being taken on-top of their coaches’ box along with the photographer with the lens longer than his tripod, will have some great vision to talk about in coming weeks/months.
The third quarter saw both teams step up a gear with Campbelltown scoring their first goal. Blake and in particular Brayden Wilson seem to come into their own through the centre as they set up goals for Rick and Ben to finish off. A good goal began with James Devlin who passed to Alex Hocking who “eventually” got it to Ben after running it through the left wing who neatly piloted the ball through the big posts. It was 10 – 9 – 69 to 1 – 4 – 10 at the last break with coaches Rix and Stevens encouraging the players to “finish stronger” over a tiring Blues team.
The fourth quarter was played in a large part down the Lions scoring end. Our radar for the goals went a stray as we hit the posts no less than 5 times, 3 from Dan Kelly’s boot. While Ben McGovern was hitting a purple patch scoring his 7th goal and Rick Ooms scored his third goal, the Lions chalked up 10 behinds for the quarter. Dylan Slater kicked a well deserved goal while James Devlin earned a goal from some good roving on the forward pocket. The final scores were 15 – 19 – 109 to 1 – 4 – 10, a 99 point victory that will help our percentage immensely. Ben earned the Dominos pizza award, while Shaun Stevens will enjoy a latté and doughnut at Krispy Kremes. Others to get a mention were Brayden Wilson, David Looyscheider and Daniel Kelly. The boys efforts and the way they ‘kept going’ on such a large ground made the trip back up the M7 and M4 all that more tolerable. We now go into the “tough” part of the draw with enthusiasm beginning with Norwest Jets next weekend at Dukes Oval. We hope to see all our supporters for this game and the following week’s game against the top of the table Razorbacks.
