Round 9 in the QAFL Velocity Sports Cup will see the Tradelink Western Magpies travel to Jack Esplin Oval on Sunday for a clash with the white hot Moningside Panthers. The Magpies will not have forgotten the beating they copped at home to the Panthers only a month ago but will be focussed on improving on what was clearly their best performance of the year against the Brisbane Lions Reserves before the break.
The break was very welcome after a very tough month for the Magpies that started on May 2nd against Southport at Southport and ended with the Lions at home on th 31st and included a trip to Alice Springs. The Magpies medical room has been pretty quiet this week which is a good indicator that the Magpies have freshened up well over the break.
The big positive for the Magpies going into this clash is that although they faded in the last quarter against the Lions is that the brand of football they displayed was the best all season with the whole group finding some confidence and showing preparedness to take the game on and back themselves and more importantly each other. No doubt coach Paul Grentell will be looking for his charges to attack the Panthers with the same attitude come Sunday.
Jack Parkes, Ben Heffernan-Roper, Richard Wenham, Ed McDonnell and Tim McEvoy will all look to continue their growing form while Matt Skubis who was outstanding against Jocob Gough last time will be keen to repeat the dose although no doubt Gough will be pumped up to square the ledger. The Magpies wil continue to give opportunity to their youngsters as James Pennycuick will play his second QAFL game for the club after providing something up forward against the Lions as will Drew Mitchell who was in everything and there is the possiblity of another debut as Matt Bennison has been named in the Magpies squad of 26 following some great performances yielding multiple goals in recent Reserves matches.
In other news Allan Borchardt will get another QAFL game under the belt with the Brisbane Lions Reserves at Labrador on Saturday and will be joined by young Victorian recruit Shannon Smith who will be making his QAFL debut with the Lions.
This weeks squad is attached below.
