Round 9 saw all teams take on Macquarie University in the next chapter of what has become a fierce rivalry.
The Under 18’s kicked the day off looking for a repeat of their first round victory over the same opponent, and the signs were promising early with the Goannas getting off to a flyer.
Mac Uni got themselves back into the game in the 2nd quarter and from there the game turned into a titanic back and forth battle.
Unfortunately, when the siren went, a gallant Goannas went down by 8 points, but put in a performance that did the club proud.
Ryan Johnstone was the leader up forward with 4 goals, whilst Jarryd Smith and Jye Brennan with 2 gave great support. Bryce Mayne was best on ground, with Scott Nolan giving great drive out of defence, and Matt Burn and Matt Cahill also performing strongly.
Division 4 took to the field looking to build momentum leading into the 2nd half of the year.
The team once again showed a lot of positive signs, however they were not able to convert it on the scoreboard, and ended up going down by 69 points.
Matt Ophof had a good day up forward with 4 goals, Damien Vassallo continued his impressive debut season in the ruck, Luke Walsh and Ben Allen also continued their brilliant form in the middle whilst Trevor Goddard and Nathan Shewan were solid performers in the backline.
The Division 3 boys went into their match confident that their first win was around the corner, and that Mac Uni could be the match to break through. A very even first quarter gave the boys hope that this would prove to be, but after that Mac Uni pulled away and scored a convincing win. To their credit the boys kept putting in, and it will not be long before the effort is rewarded with that breakthrough win.
John Maniscalco continued his impressive return to football with a best on ground effort, with Brad Byrnes, Ash Mulcahy, Peter Zuvela, Brett Jackson and Jason Wilson all continuing what have been impressive seasons.
After a promising performance against Southern Power, Division 2 went into their game confident of reversing the Round 1 result against Mac Uni and regaining their spot back in the top 4.
The match lived up to its promise as 2 final contenders battled it out in a very even game all day. In the end the 2nd quarter proved the difference, and the Goannas’ lapse in this quarter that cost them the game, with the final margin 34 points, which does not truly show how close the Goannas got.
The boys look forward to a possible rematch against these guys in the finals, and still have plenty of positives to take into another big match against UTS. Nathan Peters lead the goal kicking with 2, with our backline players Todd Waters, Tony Mance, Andrew Munns Brett Rizzo and Ricky Charles all putting in gallant performances.
