What a performance – our
best of the year. Training drills were put into practice well - time and time
again - showing the players are listening and learning. This is what we need to
be doing each week. Each game is an opportunity to improve our game –
individually and as a team. Good to see Jonathan Bell back on deck while Roman
Sargent, Matthew Bellchambers and Harris Andrews all overcame injuries to take
the field and make solid contributions. Jack Collingwood was a little too sick
to take the field but was there to cheer on his teammates which was great to
see. A bright start when a good call saw the ball go to Bryce Stackelberg on
the wing. Bryce ran into space before finding David Milne. David centred to the
top of the square for a welcome back mark and goal to Jonathan Bell.
Jonah Eoe handed in a
typically determined game and combined well with Stuart Lester and Casey
Brittain in an early raid. Casey then worked well with Nicholas Falconer who
found Shane Hele up forward and in space. Shane centred for Andrew Adair and we
increased our lead. Andrew showed a lot of desperation when the ball was on the
ground and this made him even more effective up forward. Connor Pedwell and
Mitchell Crawley showed clean hands on a number of occasions – something the
team did well as a whole all day. Certainly makes a difference when the ball is
moved on quickly and out in front of team mates. Trent Wilson showed good
desperation and closing speed to shutdown the opposition – everyone was making
a positive contribution in a pleasing first half.
Jarrod Macdonald can
certainly find the footy and he attacked it fiercely all day. Stuart Lester and
Casey Brittain were in and under consistently meaning the ball was cleared to
our advantage at most stoppages. Sam Robin provided a great target up forward –
marking or bringing it to ground for his teammates. Sam sent a great handball
into the corridor for a flying Bryce Stackelberg to set up a scoring
opportunity – something that had been worked on at training and executed to
perfection in this instance. Harris Andrews had a run in the ruck and pulled
off a great tackle to reverse the play. Jordan Richardson was great for us
again and also disposed of the ball well. Dominic Ceolin worked hard in the
demanding ruck position and chased down the opposition a number of times
causing rushed and ineffective disposals.
Jarrod Henry and Callum Bell
starred in key positions in the back six, repelling raid after raid to keep the
opposition goalless. Jarrod and Callum both have the ability to not only secure
turnovers but then use the hard-won ball wisely to their team’s advantage. I am
sure their team-mates respect the great work that is done by these two players
week after week. It will be good to have the mercurial Nathan Cooper back for
the next game after his return from an overseas trip. I am sure he and the rest
of the team can’t wait for that game to come around.
Play of the Day
Bryce Stackelberg got this
move underway when a Mitchell Crawley shepherd allowed him to escape his
opposite and hit Andrew Adair up forward. Andrew brought it to ground under the
attention of the opposition and David Milne was front and square to collect the
ball. David heard a call from Stuart Lester flashing past. Stuart sent it
towards goal where it was marked in fine fashion by Jonathan Bell.
Bottom Line
Can’t wait for next week to
again put into practice what we learn from training. Building each week on the
benchmark set in the previous game.
