Rd 6 has seen one of the biggest upsets of the Summerland League with the new Tweed Coast Tigers upsetting a highly regarded Lismore Swans at Pottsville oval on Saturday to win their first ever home game in front of a vocal Tigers crowd.
Lismore kicked the first 2 goals of the game after winning the toss and running with the wind (aka the Potty Doctor), but the Tigers bounced back straight away with determined play to take the lead which they held comfortably for the rest of the game to win by 27 points.
Lismore tried valiantly to claw their way back into the game, but the Tigers had answers right across the park in what was a great game to watch. The Tigers who have done it tough against the strong clubs in the early rounds of the Summer Land League have worked extremly hard at training to develop their skills and form combinations on the field. The hard work showed on Saturday.
Led valiantly in the centre by their Captain Josh (who severly dislocated a finger at training on Thursday) and player Coach Paul Kelly, ably supported by Jai and Johnno and with big ruckman Jacob and Trent the Tbone doing an outstanding job consistently winning the ball, the platform was laid for the Tigers forwards. The only criticism of the Tigers could be their accuracy at goal, kicking 12 behinds, otherwise the score could of been much worse for Lismore.
The Tigers back line repelled attacks all day from the frustrated Lismore forwards with Earle, Arty and Joey hard and tough at the ball and the Lismore forwards all game.
But it was up front where the damage was done with Big Jules leading the Tigers forwards kicking vital goals at critical times in the game including 2 late in the 3rd qtr into the wind to stem a Lismore comeback. Well supported by Al, Gav, Matt, Trent who all kicked mutiple goals to keep the game out of Lismores reach. New to the forwards but showing skill and determination beyond his experience Benny dominated the marking across the half forward line with some true speckies amongst much biggger players and he was rewarded by kicking the Tigers last goal to cement the win and a historic first home victory for the Tigers.
Credit must go to the Tigers coaching staff with their work showing in the Tigers skills, and hunger for the ball. The lads hunted in packs and supported each other all day which led to the win.
Thanks to all Tigers Support Staff, the Commmittee and of course the home crowd who are helping turn Pottsville Oval into the 'House of Pain' for visiting clubs.
