The Inverell Saints have recorded their single largest winning margin in their history with a 203 point demolition of the Muswellbrook Cats. The understrength Cats travelled to Inverell with just 13 players, with 3 locals helping to make up the numbers. It was always going to be a battle for the Cats, who were never allowed into the match by the Saints, so much so that the Cats were kept goalless for the entire match.
The Saints were well served by many of the usual suspects. Jack Lawton continued his journey to becoming a fantastic footballer, winning plenty of ball out of the middle and providing first use to the Saints forwards. Peter Heath was also instrumental whether it be in the ruck or up forward, finishing with 5 goals. Mick Viney equalled his own club record of 9 goals despite coming off the field injured in the final quarter and the class of Beau Ryan through the midfield was once again evident as he demonstrated plenty of hardness at the ball.
It was a fitting way for the Saints to recognise 50 gamer Fraser Hughes for his services to the club as he led the team off after the final siren and although he couldn't quite take the screaming mark he had hoped for, he showed he had lost none of his touch from his previous 49 games.
The Saints will now look forward to a week off for the long weekend and try to continue their run of 3 straight wins when they host the Kangaroos in a fortnight. The Roos will be coming off a loss to cross town rivals the Swans and will be keen to get back to the winner's circle. The Saints have now entered the top two for the first time this year, and won't be keen to give up that spot again.
