Firstly, we must say an enormous thankyou to club President James Mackie as without his dedication to the cause, Saturdays games would not have gone ahead. Jimmy's communication with the Council, Cricket Assoc and groundsman Peter Terry , has been anything short of outstanding. To all the players that helped with the covers you also did yourselves proud in helping to get Saturdays games under way.
On a blustery afternoon in slippery conditions Newcastle City came up with wins in both senior grades in Saturdays Mega Day against the Cardiff Football Club. After a decision was made early in the morning regarding the weather it was decided to play the two senior grades in delayed time slots on Saturday followed by the remaining games on Sunday.
The Reserve Grade game was a high intensity and skillful contest throughout with the City boys running away with the win late in the second half after the scores were locked up at half time. The spirited win was lead by a well structured, discipline and efficient midfield consisting of Woodhams, George Armagos, Niland, Hayden Kavanagh and Webster and was fed well from the air by Travis Walls. The Wilmott boys combined well across half back supporting a convincing performance by Brendon McMahon and Owen Dawes. The difference in the end was a strong performance by Mick Deed up forward who ended up with five majors. Brad Ross, Tim Sullivan, Patty Hanley and Jason Kavanagh added some spice to a side who offered a very consistence and entertaining performance for the Blues running out 32 point winners. Thanks also to the Cardiff Ressies who came up for the awards after the game and stayed on to watch a quarter and a half of footy from the verandah, sportsmanship like this should happen more often within the BDAFL.
The Black Diamond Cup fixture was a highly entertaining match continuing the rich and healthy tradition held between the two arch rival clubs. The contest started at a rapid pace with midfield getting the upper hand early racking up possessions through the early stages of the game bringing the ball cleanly inside 50 on several occasions. Similarly to the reserve grade game, it was goal for goal throughout the first half with City proving to have the edge, particularly through the midfield of Knight, O'Bryan, Stewart, Wilkin, Mark Wheeler and Enright. City clicked into gear in the second half running away with the contest all around the ground. Josh Wheeler earned some more frequent flyer points up forward and Jayson Cleaver was at his vintage best snagging three telling goals. A consistent and hard working effort by big target Tom Hunt in a best on field performance was a highlight as was the no frills effort by John Burns at full back. Luke Rawnsley was a welcomed addition to the backline taking several breath taking grabs on the last line of defence and setting up many counterattacks through the middle. Cameron Keast continued to improve with an exciting performance on league heavy-weight Mick Ryan holding him to just one solitary major. In a very even performance by the Blues its difficult not to mention everyone as there were solid performances right across the ground. The blues kicked four goals to one in the last coming away with a comfortable 27 point victory. The senior side will continue to work hard heading towards the second half of the season taking on Warners Bay next week before the long weekend break.
