EAGLES START THEIR CLIMB BACK
FINAL SCORE VERMONT 14-20-104 def BALWYN 11-13-79
It was a magnificent team victory with every player making a significant contribution at one stage or another. We were wonderfully coached especially in the roles of Bardon and Froud. The spoiling tactics of our backline âÃÂàMcCarthy, Waller, Bird and Griffiths against giant opposition was terrific.
It was a warm day as we went in with an unchanged lineup. Froud kicked our first but Balwyn kicked the next two after McCarthy was clearly held. Balwyn kicked 2 more goals as we missed many easy shots. At this stage we were 1-6. Greig goaled via Bardon and after having plenty of the play during the quarter we trailed by 16 points.Balwyn kicked the first goal of the 2nd term which was to be there only major. Mendes tackling was unbelievable and each time he went off for a breather he looked totally spent. Cotchett goaled then Froud missed twice and we were 3-10. All of a sudden we strung goals together âÃÂàFroud from an angle via Bardon and Mendes, Stewart levelled the score then Rushton and Froud gave us a 12 point lead at ÃÂý time.
Better players for the half were âÃÂàMendes, Rushton, Stephen, Griffiths, Froud,
Cullen, Bardon and Ross. At ÃÂý time we led 7-11 to 6-5.
After the break Balwyn regained the lead with 3 quick goals. We regained the lead with goal from Froud via Stephen then Greig via Dore and Griffiths. Morse was having a great quarter across half back and Fyfe came into the game. Fyfe is getting better each week. Stephen, Mullett and Bardon were all doing a power of running. Millhouse gave us a 14 point lead at ÃÂþ time with a goal via Cotchett after a defensive mistake. We kicked 4-3 to 2-4 in the final term. After 2 early misses both Millhouse and Froud goaled. Froud was outstanding and is journey into the backline for a while really paid dividends. When Greig goaled via Cotchett the Eagles were looking good. During this period CullenâÃÂÃÂs single effort in keeping the ball in our possession when under extreme pressure was fantastic âÃÂàhe had a good game. Balwyn kicked the next two but we were at arms length. Greig sealed our wonderful victory with a goal via Mullett. The Eagles victors by 25 points.
Better players in the 2nd half were âÃÂàMorse, Stephen, Fyfe, Mullett, Rushton, Bardon, Cullen , Froud and Millhouse.
Goalkickers âÃÂàFroud 5, Greig 4, Millhouse2 and singles to Cotchett, Stewart and Rushton.
Best Players âÃÂàStephen, Bardon, Rushton, Mendes, Froud, Morse, Mullett, Cullen, Henley, McCarthy and Griffiths.
Possessions âÃÂàBardon 34, Stephen 32, Mullett 30, Henley 25, Cotchett 21 and Morse 18.
1% - McCarthy 10, Morse 9, Mendes 8, Stewart 8 and Stephen 7. Henley took 12 marks with Greig and Bardon 9 each.
CoachâÃÂÃÂs Comments âÃÂàA great effort across the board. David praised MullettâÃÂÃÂs game. The people behind the scenes were fantastic âÃÂàour young kids were outstanding - there were lots and lots of positives.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE BALWYN 14-11-95 def VERMONT 12-16-88
A very even game all day. Not much scoring by both teams in the first half. Our 3 goals came from Conroy, Dressing and Henderson. A smother by Dressing was a highlight of the 1st term. Better players to ÃÂý time were âÃÂàBull, Alexander, Stewart, Rogneda, Dressing and Jones. At half time scores were level at 3-6. As I was hosting the lunch John McCarthy took some notes for me. After the break Dressing kicked 2 goals to continue his recent good form up forward. Other goals came from L.Davis and Henderson. Balwyn led by 10 points at ÃÂþ time. In the last quarter we kicked 5-4 to 5-1. Goals came from Bull, Conroy and Debney who kicked two.We certainly had our chance with 90 seconds to go. We trailed by a point but bad handball options when a kick was needed resulted in a turnover and a Balwyn goal on the siren. Better players for the half were âÃÂàTsindos, Ryan, Alexander, Bull, Stewart and L.Davis.
Goalkickers âÃÂàConroy and Dressing 3 each, Debney and Henderson 2 each with singles to L.Davis and Bull.
CoachâÃÂÃÂs Best Players âÃÂàPisano, Stewart, Fary, J.Bird, Bull and Jones.
CoachâÃÂÃÂs Comments âÃÂàWe dominated for long periods with no reward. Our decision making cost us. We had more play but didnâÃÂÃÂt get the rewards.
