After a pretty good week on the track on the Wednesday night, 'The Clubbies' were fired up to have a red hot crack at Old Trinity. From the first bounce that is exactly what they did.
In the first quarter Daniel Mclellan was all over it getting the ball out of the middle and hitting big Dean Barry at Centre Half Forward in quick succession kicking 3 goals by quarter time. At quarter time The Friars were leading by 2 goals, hurdle number 1 passed as we had won the first quarter.
In the 2nd, we kicked away from them kicking 5 goals to 2. New recruit to the club Neil Trigwell made his mark early getting his hands on the footy a lot and making good use of it. Michael Oosterwyk proved to be great playing off the half forward flank bagging himself a couple with Chris Piggott, Matt Burgess and Wade Carter chipping in. Our backmen had also been steadying the ship for us and setting up our attack on numerous occasions. Michael Taylor, Jake Littlepage and Dan Tucker applying the most pressure.
After half time I thought that we took our foot off the gas a little and left them within a sniff of being a real threat to us. I had asked the boys at half time to really bury their noses in the dirt in the 3rd and make sure that the game is practically sealed by 3 quarter time. If it hadn't of been for some terrific efforts from our usual suspects in Hagen Shaw, Daniel Mclellan and Michael Oosterwyk along with some players such as Andrew Ferguson, Matt Burgess and Tim Emmett, we may well have let them right back into the game.
The final quarter was a real battle. To the credit of Old Trinity, having no bench left and The Friars rotating midfield players all day to keep fresh legs running, they kept coming at us. However with a bit of hard work from all of our players, we held them at bay and came away with the 4 points.
This week sees us at home against Old Brighton. There is certainly no easy games for us for the rest of the season. But if the boys can continue to communicate effectively, work for each other as a team, then there will be a lot for opposition teams to worry about for the rest of the season and the finals. 'The Clubbies' season has just restarted.
Go Friars, Ben
