This week the Tradelink Western Magpies face a big challenge on the back of a narrow loss last week when they take on competition heavy weights Morningside at Wildbrook Wines Park at 2pm. The Magpies have opted for another bolter naming 16 year old Allan Borchardt in its squad of 26 to be reduced to 22 on match day. Borchardts pace and finnishing ability demonstrated with 4 goals in the U/18 match against Aspley last weekend has resulted in a possible debut as the Magpies match committee continues to search for pace in the forward 50 following the loss of Zaine Pringle to a broken leg in Round 3.
The upside of last weeks narrow loss is that the Magpies midfield brigade are showing signs of feeling more comfortable with the pace of QAFL Division 1 football and Richard Wenham, Ben Heffernan-Roper, Tom Power and Matt stevens are starting to get their hands on more leather and are using it more effectively. Heffernan-Roper has been in outstanding form for the past three weeks and is surely in the sights of State Selectors as they finalise their U/21 and Senior squad selections this weekend. Unfortunately rookie ruckman Dom Beer has conceded to a shoulder problem after two good performances at the top level which will see the Magpies revert back to make shift ruckmen.
Another upside was Val Popes exciting second half last week which should give the gifted forward come midfielder great confidence coming into the game and the Magpies will be looking for some spark from Pope as he is quite often the barrometer for the teams performance. Ed McDonnell continues to show his class and composure in defence and must also be on the radar of State Selectors demonstrating consistency and outstanding courage week in week out.
Coach Paul Grentell will be looking for his chargers to apply undying pressure on the Panthers with the aim of creating doubt in their minds and perhaps the opportunity to muster an upset.
The Reserves will start at 11.15am looking to bounce back after their first loss for the season against Aspley last week which will kick off a big day of footy including Ladies Day from 12pm. This weeks MSI Taylor Western Magpies Mascot will be Corey Workman from the Sherwood U/10's.
