Over previous weeks, the Clubbies had struggled to get off to a good start. Not this week! Although we still trailed at quarter time, it was only down by 1 point. This was attributed to our ability to get the ball out of the middle and deliver it quickly down to Dean Barry at full forward who kicked 3 goals in the first quarter. So there was a lot of positivity to be taken into the 2nd quarter by the boys.
In the 2nd quarter we let them get away from us. Monash started to run hard for each other and worked the ball forward and really locked it in their forward fifty well. If it hadn't of been for the efforts of Dan Tucker, Michael Taylor and Jake Littlepage, we may well have been down by a lot more.
So at half time we were down by 5 goals. I asked the boys to keep their heads up as we were still well in this game. We needed to fix some accountability issues and keep the ball moving forward at all costs. We needed to go back to playing basic, tough, hard football if we were going to make a game of it.
Things were looking good early in the 3rd quarter, we had kicked the 1st goal, and the boys seemed to be starting to rally. Then Monash kicked a couple of goals and the majority of our players seemed to drop their heads and this was to continued for the rest of the game. By orange time we had a bench full of injured players and the boys on the field were starting to tire.
In the last quarter, I asked the boys to increase their work rate to earn a little bit of respectability on the scoreboard. I knew that we were a better side than the performance we'd put on the ground this game. We may have only kicked 1 more goal, but our supporters and I have commended the team on how hard they fought in the final quarter. They never gave up, even when they thought they had nothing left in the tank they kept fighting.
There are still a lot of positive signs from our matches. We are still very much in touch with the rest of the competition. We need to now all get to training and work on our weaknesses together, and we can still be a strong force to be reckoned with this season.
Cheers, Ben
