Round 2 â First home game for the year
After disposing of Xavs last week the Bloods were looking forward to playing their first home game on the hallowed turf of Fisher Oval. Our opposition this week was Geelong College who just scraped home last week. The crowd of 271 (according to the scoreboard) was looking forward to a tough game and they werenât disappointed.
From the opening bounce we went forward several times and Jacko, Scully and Gunna (welcome back) were looking good. Big Vlad was crashing through from the backline but the high rate of turnovers were costing us dearly. Young âSnakeâ Lynch slotted his first major and Big Mick Meehan at full forward kicked a couple as well. But like a bad rash Geelong wouldnât go away and at the first break we were only a goal up.

Lynchie swung a few changes for the start of the 2nd and all of a sudden we were pushing forward at will. Jacko was gathering possessions and spotted up Mick several times. Big Mick went bang, bang, bang, bang, bang and had 7 up to half time. Shakâs tackling was as hard as ever and Emilio Bitters down back was repelling anything that came his way. The forward pressure was starting to tell on Geelong and Gunna, Venton and Coleman all kicked straight and true to give us 8 for the quarter. Geelong could only manage 1 and couldnât match our pressure for the ball. A great quarter and we went to half time looking good.

After the break Geelong kicked a couple and and started to think they were in it. Scully kicked a great one on the run and Tim Lockwood , Ash King and Nick Gooda were very solid for the quarter. Corey Millard was using his big frame well down back and Bitters was gathering plenty of the ball. Our second quarter helped us greatly because in the third we were having plenty of shots but not converting as well. Mick added a couple more to bring up 9 heading toward the orange break. Better players for the quarter included Thanu and Coleman down back.

Nearly 60 up starting the last and Geelong were looking tired. Gunna took a couple of great grabs and pushed forward well. A bit of slow start to the last but we kept kicking forward and Mick added 2 more to get to double figures for the game. Jackoâs possessions were climbing into the 30âs and Gooda chimed in with a nice one to keep us well in front. Farmer and Cam Hill were solid down back and limited Geelong to just 2 for the quarter. A tough game that was won with our great second quarter and some great efforts from all concerned .
