Does a game of football get any more desperate than two teams new to a competition languishing at the bottom of the ladder winless after four rounds with similar form lines being competitive at times while outclassed on others? It is D-Day for the Tradelink Western Magpies and Aspley when they battle for more than just 4 points at Wildbrook Wines Park in Chelmer tomorrow.
Both clubs have been handed some comprehensive football lessons in the first four rounds but on the same token have been able to produce some good performances without getting the 4 points. The two did meet in a pre-season match at Graham Rd which saw Aspley get over the top of the Magpies by a few goals after the Magpies blasted to a 5 goal lead at quarter time but much has changed since then.
Although the Magpies suffered at the hands of Southport last week the form of Ben Heffernan-Roper over the last couple of games has been outstanding and is building while Richard Wenham is showing signs of gaining confidence at the level and is starting to produce the run and carry his team craves. Thomas Roberts and Ed Mcdonnell were solid performers as part of an embattled defence last week and will be key factors this week. Meanwhile the Magpies forwards of Hamill, Scott and Barton will be looking to return to their form of two weeks ago against Broadbeach and Kale Reed has been included for his first QAFL game to add zip to the fall of the ball down forward.
Big Dominic Beer will play his second game after a solid debut against the top team last week and will look to give the Magpies midfield led by the bullocking Matt Stevens first use of the footy which will be a crucial battle all day long.
