U/12 Black Match Report
This week the Lions took on a confident Quakers Hill team in what proved to be a physical encounter. The Lions started the game well, quickly going into attack where Leon Kaltenbacher showed the importance of playing in front of your opponent to take a great mark in the goal square and kick the opening goal of the match. After a 2 week absence due to a fractured toe, Jesse Grazotis took control in the forward line booting 3 goals for the quarter and with Jake Stevens chipping in for another goal the Lions had opened up a good lead by quarter time.
Quarter time scores: Lions 5.1.31 to Bombers 1.1.7
The Lions again outscored their bigger opponents in the second quarter 2 goals to 1 even though the Bombers seemed to have more of the ball. This could be credited to the great job our defence was doing in repelling the Bombers attack on goal.
Half time scores: Lions 7.5.47 to Bombers 2.5.17
The third quarter saw the Lions take the physical stuff right up to their opponents, laying some hard tackles and heavy bumps of their own, and with Brody Swarbrick playing his best game for the season were able to again outscore the Bombers 2 goals to 1. Jack Noble was continuing on with his good form in the ruck and at centre half forward continually kicking the ball deep into the forward line, but the highlight of the quarter was seeing Tiarne Kerr bump 2 much bigger opponents than herself and then laying a nice tackle to create a loose ball which allowed her team mates to gather and kick it back into attack.
Three quarter time scores: Lions 9.6.60 to Bombers 3.5.23
The Lions had finally wore their opponents down, scoring 2 goals 5 behinds to 3 behinds in the final quarter to run away with a 51 point win.
Final scores: Lions 11.11.77 def Bombers 3.8.26
Krispy Kreme Award: Tiarne Kerr

Under 14's Match Report
It was a great day for football again at Dukes Oval this week for the big clash between the Lions and the Hawkesbury Saints. It was Ben Edwards 100th game for the Lions and the stage was set for a big match.
The first quarter saw the Lions attack from the opening bounce and they moved the ball quickly into the forward line, however were unable to convert on the scoreboard registering only 3 behinds for the quarter. The Saints made the most of their early opportunities and had 4 goals on the scoreboard by quarter time. The second quarter saw the Saints kick another 6 goals while the Lions could only manage 1 goal when Chris Nolan kicked a major and got the ball stuck in the tree. Thanks to some swift work from the reserve umpire, a new ball was quickly provided and the game continued. Jeremy Hardy worked hard in the backline and Simon Masters had another good game on the wing collecting several kicks and helping the Lions into attack. Beau Dingemans worked hard all day and played a solid game for the Lions and Blake Langer was in great form. Steven Webb played hard all day and took a couple of great marks.
The third quarter brought new hope for the Lions however Hawkesbury had other ideas adding 4 goals for the quarter, despite an improved effort from the Lions. At the start of the final quarter a huge effort was required and that is exactly what the Lions produced. Ben Edwards kicked a goal in his 100th game to help the Lions outscore the Saints in the last quarter. Adrian Boelhouwer found some run in the last half to continually drive the Lions into attack. Pat Pope was suffering from a foot injury this week but played through the pain and took several important marks in the backline late in the game. Morgan Pollock had a solid game this week providing an option up forward.
It was a great effort from the Lions who never gave up all day and played their best footy late in the game however could not catch the Saints.

Under 16's Match Report by Paul Hocking-Manager
Another sunny Dukes oval was the venue for this game between the undefeated Norwest Eagles against the improving Lions. Having disposed of the Norwest Jets, St Clair Crows and Penrith Swans, the Eagles were looking to add the Lions to their victories while the Lions were coming off a disappointing loss to the Razorbacks after beating them for three quarters of the game. For the Lions the playing depth was tested with Joe Masters and Tom Noble committed elsewhere and Alex Hocking out through injury in a school mishap. However, we welcomed local junior Dylan Slater to the club for his first game with the Lions. The Lions had the reliable Tim Wade as Goal Umpire with the young at heart Paul Devlin as Boundary Umpire. The effervescent Bob Miller was helped by the young Liam Worth and the even younger Nicholas Hocking as runners. With coaches Glen Stevens handling the positional board and John Rix handling the lollies, the game shaped up as a true test for both teams.
The opening exchanges at the centre saw the ball go between the half back lines before a good pick up by Blake Daenell kicked forward for Rick Ooms to take a good mark. He passed on to Ben McGovern who then played on quickly past the man on the mark to bring up our opening goal. Another ball coming out of our defence saw Ben kick a bouncing ball to Michael Kerr in the pocket who kicked over his shoulder for the Lions 2nd goal. Further goals to Ben McGovern (who was taking some sensational marks) and Brendan Redcliffe left the opposition shell shocked. They finished with two goals for the quarter so we went to the first break 4 goals 2 - 26 to 2 . 4 - 16.
The second quarter was a great one for the Lions. Blake put on a great shepherd in the pocket for Rick to get his 2nd goal, While Stevens was beating three opposition players on his own to deny the Eagles any chance of scoring. A typical goal of the quarter saw Grant Martin kick out of defence to Jackson Swarbrick who switched across the centre to a running Marty Pope who then passed accurately to Rick for a great team goal. Two goals to Blake, another by Michael Kerr saw the Lions running away with the game. Marty kicked a good running goal with the opposition running away from him thinking they were soccer goalies! With Ben's 3 goals for the quarter and the Eagles held scoreless, the Lions went to the long break 13. 3 -81 to 2.4 - 16.
The third quarter was almost as good as the second for the Lions as they held the Eagles to a few difficult shots at goal and a couple of rushed behinds so they only added 5 points for the quarter. On the other hand the Lions scored almost at will with a long punt from just outside the 50 for a goal to James Devlin being a highlight. Grant Martin's great efforts between the back and forward pockets were rewarded with a goal, while Dan Kelly picked up 2 goals as he started to break away from his opposition player. Ben picked up his 5th goal for the game so the Lions went to the final break well ahead!
With last weeks fourth quarter loss still fresh in their minds, the Lions called for focus but again their efforts on the park slackened badly. The Eagles kicked the first 2 goals of the quarter as coaches Rix and Stevens admitted to swapping a few player around to try some different options. Clearly the options weren't working and it took some on-field blasts by Bob with the water bottle for us to get our first goal of the quarter through Rick Ooms. Michael Kerr and Blake sneaked goals in forward rushes but the highlight of the quarter was Nick Adams unselfish pass to Alex Wade who put himself on a great lead 30m from goal. Alex calmly potted the 6 pointer to give the Lions 21 goals 8 behinds - 134 points to the Eagles 6 goals 12 behinds - 48 points!
The Krispy Kreme award went to the great Shaun Stevens who probably saved at least 6 goals as the leader of the backs. Others to have good games include Grant Martin, James Devlin, Ben McGovern, Sam Devlin and Mark Myhill. At the end of the game the boys reminded themselves that the way the played this game, not just the win, showed that they were capable of taking this year's flag! We now look forward to our next game at Cook Park against traditional rivals, the St Clair Crows.
