In a late call-up, first year 18's player Rowan Page was promoted to the Seniors team against Burleigh. A natural athlete, the former Junior Club Champion had impressed in his first year of football in 2007 and again was a potent force in the Club's Under 16's last season. Rowan was also selected in the Western Taipans squad. He was best on ground in the Under 18's opening match this season when the Pumas defeated PBC and then consolidated that with another top performance in the team's demolition of Coolangatta. But in a surprise for Rowan, Senior Coach Brad Pollock had seen enough to know he was the next young gun to be asked to step up with the Seniors. And he didn't disappoint. Page was among the top players (and a goal) in the Pumas loss to the Bombers, going down by 10 goals.
Not to be outshone though, other young guns were among the best for the Pumas on Saturday also. On the back of Tiger Monk being named in AFLQ's 'Team of the Week' after Round 4, the Pumas' ruckman produced a man-of-the-match effort against the Bombers. Luke Ruf who has a season of experience in the top grade was also among Springwood's best. Firing the shots also was young gun Andrew Sponneck who kicked 3 goals. Monk, Ruf and Sponneck are still eligible for Under 18's and the talent emerging from this group bodes well for the Pumas' senior football ranks into the future.
In the Under 18's win over Burleigh (7.12.54 to 5.4.34), a most unfortunate injury to Pumas Captain Will Sutton is likely to deny his return this season and the addition of another young gun in the Seniors. A 200 Juniors gamer in 2008, Will trained with the SE Bushrangers earlier this season before injury kept him from representation. The born leader is an inspiration to his team mates and they know that his enthusiasm for the game will see him back on the paddock soon. Team mates and all at the club wish Will a speedy recovery.
