This week the U/12 Black team come up against Penrith at a sunny Dukes Oval. The absence of four of our regular players saw an opportunity given to Hayden Perry from the U/10's with Joel Batson and Nicholas Hocking from the U/12's White team to fill in.
The first quarter started off with the ball going back and forth between the two defences. Tim Thomas and Joshua King were in everything and were well supported by Mitchell Andrews & Joel Walsh. With Jack Noble in fine form at centre half forward, the Lions put on an impressive display of team football, and if not for some inaccuracy in front of goal could have gone into the quarter time break with a bigger lead than the 28 pt advantage they already held.
Quarter time scores: Lions 3.5.28 to Penrith 0.0.0
The second quarter again started off with Penrith throwing everything at the Lions, however with the ball continually being driven into the forward line and the Lions new "ball magnet" Tiarne Kerr creating havoc, the Lions were able to increase their lead to an impressive 40 pts at half time.
Half time scores: Lions 5.10.40 to Penrith 0.0.0
With the Lions seemingly on their way to a third straight victory it was decided to mix things up a bit. Everybody's position had changed. Reliable full back Tim Thomas suddenly found himself at full forward and although wanting to drift back down to his more familiar position, he still managed to boot 3 fantastic goals to give the Lions a well earned win via the mercy rule by three quarter time
Three quarter time scores: Lions 8.13.61 to Penrith 0.1.1
The Lions played out the last quarter the same way in which they started the game and were able to kick another 2 goals for the quarter.
Final scores: Lions 10.15.75 to Penrith 0.1.1
Krispy Kreme Awards: Jack Noble & Joshua King
Goal Scorers: Brayden 3, Tim 3, Jack 2, Leon 1 & Tiarne 1

The weather was kind to us this week with a bright, sunny, warm day at Dukes Oval with no wind, a big improvement from last week. The Lions started well against Camden and went into the quarter time break with a slender lead. Camden gained the advantage in the second and third quarters and the Lions did better in the last quarter.
Simon Masters played his first game for the Lions today and showed the more experienced guys how it was done and scored the Lions first goal. Jeremy Rix started well in the ruck and was also dominant around the ground. Liam Worth returned this week and played a strong game in the backline. Nathan Milgate, Jeremy Hardy, Beau Dingemans and Hugh Arnold played some great defensive footy in the backline and restricted Camdens scoring opportunities.
The Lions fought hard in the last quarter in an attempt to snatch the game from Camden. Jake Jeffreys- Brown made the most of his opportunities with a great pass to Ben Foxall who took a great mark to set up a scoring opportunity for the Lions. Chris Nolan continued his great form and took a strong mark and kicked the goal. Stephen Webb played a strong game this week with some great kicks into the forward line and some strong tackling. Pat Pope played another exceptional game collecting kicks all over the ground. He was well supported by Adrian Boelhouwer who also had an impact all over the ground. Julian Borg took on a defensive role in the last half and had a significant impact on the game.
It was a great effort from the Lions who never gave up all day.

Under 16's Report Round 4 2nd May 2009 v Razorbacks
A sunny Dukes oval was the venue for this game between the top of the table Razorbacks against our U16 Lions. A good preparation was put into this team by coaches Rix and Stevens with the evergreen trainer Bob putting in his thoughts as well. While consistent performers Alex Wade and Martin Pope were unavailable for the game, it was great to have the support of "club legend" Matt Payne to run water for the boys. Of course with experienced goal umpire Tim (Eagle-Eye) Wade and Boundary Umpire Paul (Forrest Gump) Devlin, backing the boys up on the field, the afternoon was all set for a great clash of the "big" men.
After Razorbacks kicked the first 2 goals of the game, the Lions replied with some pressure on the Razorbacks back pockets after Nick Adams began winning the centre. A great mark by Joe Masters from a razorback goal square kick sent the ball back to the top of the square. Off hands Rick Ooms picked up the ball and put it through for our first goal. More opportunities later in the quarter saw Blake Daenell and Dan Kelly score in similar circumstances. With the Razorbacks more worried about the player than the ball, the Lions took a slender lead into the first quarter 3.3-21 to 3.1-19
Again the Lions started the second quarter slowly losing the centre for a Razorback goal. The game seemed to pick up pace as the Razorbacks tried to exert themselves physically in every tackle. This tactic gave James Devlin a penalty and then a 50 metre penalty. Beginning just outside the 50 metre line on a 45° angle, James steered the goal home to give the lead back to the Lions. Then with some good work in the forward pocket Ben McGovern guided the ball through on an angle that 9 players out of 10 would have missed. The Razorbacks tried to come back in the middle of the quarter but pressure from our backs meant they kicked only one more goal out of their 5 attempts. Blake Daenell, who was having a great rover's game, scored another goal to give the Lions a half time lead 6.6-42 to 5.5-35.
The third quarter was a hard fought affair for the Lions with fatigue seemingly a bit of a problem after such a physical game. While the Lions kicked the first 2 goals through Rick Ooms who twice broke away from their halfback defence, it was the Razorbacks who with an increasing southerly wind at their backs, started to pepper the goals with some favourable decisions and bounces of the ball. A late goal by Ben McGovern seemed to steady the game for the Lions. Going into the last quarter with the wind at our backs, the Lions maintained a lead 9.7-61 to 7.11-53.
Tactics seemed to now dominate the sides with coach Rix calling on a final, focused effort for the Lions while the Razorbacks broke and then reformed their huddle at least twice to make sure they had the Lions focusing on them rather than the game. Well the tactic worked for the Razorbacks as again the Lions started the quarter slowly with 2 quick goals from the Razorbacks to hit the lead. Again with decisions going their way the ball seemed to follow the razorbacks as they added another 2 goals to really dash the hopes of the Lions. In an inexplicable (and many junior coaches would say un-sportsman like) act, the Razorbacks now controlled the play by kick passing back and forward on their left wing to stop any possession for the Lions. After a few more penalties for our frustrated players playing the man and not the ball, the Razorbacks finished with another few goals to win the game 13.16-94 to 9.7-61.
Coach Rix sat the boys down at the end of the game and told them that we were the better side for 3 quarters of that game but we fell into their trap for the last quarter. Also the rotating of players off the bench seemed to unsettle our side a few times so a few hard decisions, especially in tight games, may need to occur later in the season. Finally having seen the top side play, we now know that this Lions side could mix it with anyone on any given day. The Krispy Kreme award went to Jackson Swarbrick, with special mentions to Nick Adams, Rich Ooms, Joseph Masters and Sam Devlin. Our next game against Norwest Eagles on our home ground Dukes will hopefully see the boys play well for all four quarters of AFL footy!
