The Magpies performed considerably better than the previous week in front of their home crowd at Chelmer on ANZAC Day, however fell short of claiming their first premiership points of the season against Broadbeach.
The Magpies started well and key forward David Hamill was in good form to kick the first two goals for the Magpies who trailed by only five points at quarter-time. The second quarter was played at an extremely fast pace, and the Cats were able to get the better of the Pies to extend the margin before some resistance came through the likes of Richard Wenham and Chris Judson in the midfield, Ed McDonnell in defence and Josh Barton and David Hamill up forward. At half-time the Magpies were still within reach of Broadbeach who led by 21 points.
After the main break the home side took the game on and Luke Scott finished expertly from 40 metres on the run after some excellent build up play. The Magpies started to win some more contested ball in the middle and started to look dangerous all around the ground. Zaine Pringle was one player generating plenty of run through the midfield and across half forward before he sustained a serious leg injury in a marking contest. Pringle, a young and exciting player in only his second senior game now looks set to miss the rest of the season with a broken leg. After the injury the Cats seemed to re-group and finished the third term with eight goals to the Magpies five and take a commanding lead into the final quarter.
The Magpies never gave up in their pursuit for the four points and matched Broadbeach in the last quarter. Both teams booted five goals in the last term which meant Broadbeach took the honours and recorded a 21.11 (137) to 15.6 (96) victory. Chris Judson was brilliant for the Magpies in the midfield and David Hamill was excellent in front of goal to finish with six for the match.
The Magpies now turn their attentions to last seasonâÃÂÃÂs Velocity Cup Premiers, Southport, who they meet at Fankhauser Reserve this Saturday, May 2nd at the usual time of 2pm.

RESERVES
The Reserves went into this match looking to make it three wins from as many matches this season when they met Broadbeach in a twilight match following the seniors. And they didnâÃÂÃÂt take long to get their first score on the board. It was a great start for the Magpies who raced to a quick lead and booted five goals to none in the first term to take a commanding 33 point lead into quarter-time.
The Pies team consisted of some excellent young players and more experienced players with senior qualities. The midfield was stacked full of great talent with Jye Spencer, Blake McClennan, Brett McEvoy and Luke Boulton doing the damage. They repeatedly provided Scott Musson, Peter Kilroy and William Fozard with goal scoring opportunities, and the later didnâÃÂÃÂt disappoint. Fozard finished with five for the match and was a real headache for the Broadbeach defenders.
The Magpies entered the second half with a nine goal lead and didnâÃÂÃÂt let up. Their tackling pressure and defence was superb and gave the Cats little chance of making in-roads. Gabe McKinnon had his best game for the season in defence and was well supported by Matt Dillon, Todd Dunn and Kale Reed. Reid Dobson was sharp throughout and was among the best in what was a great team effort.
Eventually the Magpies proved too strong and skilful for their opponents to win 18.9 (117) to 10.11 (71). The coaching staff is extremely happy with the start to the season and is looking forward to a big challenge this Saturday when the Pies face heavyweights Southport. A pleasing result to end a great day of football which was played in true ANZAC spirit.
