After a good win against Bendigo Pioneers the Rebel players now focused on the Gippsland Power. There was good intensity at training and this was proven when somehow Pat Barber manage to knock out Sam Cowling's (2nd in the world for karate) tooth, also another huge surprise was 'pretty boy' Shaun Lyle shaved his head.
For the second time the Rebel players and staff were heading back to Bendigo, this time they were facing a very strong team and it promised to be a good match. It turned out to be a perfect day for footy with the sun out and little wind.
The first quarter showed a high intensity, hard working performance by the Rebel players as they got off to a good start this week and led at the first break by 13 points.
Not much changed in the second quarter as the Rebel players kept up their work rate and pressure on the opposition, sometimes skills going forward let the Rebel's down though, but at half time the scores were 64 to 30 and they were in a good position to go on and win the game.
After the break the Rebel players dropped the intensity and work rate that they had showed so far and slipped into cruise control, this enabled the Gippsland power to come out and add on 5 goals which then had them going into three quarter time with a big chance of being able to steal the win in the last quarter.
The final quarter was a thriller with scores at stages being level, the game was in the balance and costly turnovers were being made by both teams. This quarter also showed who really wanted to win more and super efforts that were inspirational came out, like Hoppers run and chase from behind to stop a goal that would have put Gippsland in front, other memorable moments were Hoy's smother and fearless attack at the footy, also Slabs diving tackle to save a shot at goal. It was actions like these and many more that lifted the Rebel players to a hard earned victory against Gippsland with the final scores 80 to 86.
During the game Josh Cowan provided much needed run in the middle and also did Kevin Bourke off the back line, they both got plenty of the footy. Up forward Dylan Parish took some strong marks and finished with 4 goals and efforts by the back line players controlling some very good players like Butcher helped the Rebels take the 4 points away. Congratulations to Sam Dwyer on his first game, Sam fitted in well and played a solid game.
The rebel players and staff now have a bye, they are currently 2 wins and 1 loss with still plenty room for improvement to be done which is a good sign. Good luck to all the boys going back to play with their local clubs this week and look forward to seeing you all return with no injuries in 2 weeks time to take on Western Jets.
Go the mighty Rebels.
