North Ballarat Rebels travelled to Bendigo'sQueen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday, for the opening round of the 2009 TAC Cup Competition. A promising pre-season campaign, under new coach Glen Wilkins, saw the Rebels ready for action against last year's premiers, the Murray Bushrangers. It was the Bushrangers though, who came out firing with seven first quarter goals in a powerful display of aerial strength and hard running. The Rebels appeared slow to react and allowed their opposition to dictate termsand direct play forward through the centre corridor. The Bushrangers and the breeze forced the ball and Rebels players wide during the second quarter, restricting scoring opportunities. Too many Bushrangers were able to gain front position in marking contests and Rebels players made matters worse vying with each other overhead and in gathering ground balls. Despite these errors and some poor disposal skills, the Rebels held their opponents to one goal through a generally more intensive, overall effort.
Facing a six goal deficit at half-time, the Rebels responded with a spirited third quarter performance. Dean Gavin's soaring mark on the grandstand wing epitomised a revival that saw the Rebels score four goals through better delivery the forwards. Closer defence by the Rebels, who zoned well to corral opponents and prevent free running, increased pressure on the "Bushies" mid-field, in turn cutting off many of their forward thrusts. Unfortunately, lapses in concentration by the Rebels allowed the Bushrangers to score three goals to maintain a healthy lead.
The Rebels started well in the final quarter, but strength in close contests and continued mid-field running to create opportunities for forwards saw the Bushrangers comfortable winners by 57 points. The Rebels will need to focus on passing skills with foot and hand at training this week, and manage a consistent, four-quarter effort if they are to overcome Bendigo Pioneers in Swan Hill next Saturday.
