A large crowd turned out on a sunny yet windy Saturday to witness the new-look Pumas in their first fixture match of the premiership season.
After scoring the opening goal and with a most competitive start, the Pumas trailled by only a couple of goals at the first break. However, the Demons were soon able to break down Springwood's raids into their forward 50 and posted a further 7 majors before the long break and seemingly have the match wrapped up. The third quarter was much the same before the Pumas dug deep to score another 4 goals in an even last quarter.
With many new and young players at the club this year, the Pumas showed that there is a lot of improvement in them following their wins over Mayne and Coolangatta in recent practice matches. Certainly the lessons learned from playing the highly-ranked Surfers will be invaluable over the coming weeks.
The Demons had to work hard throughout the game, but in the end, their experience came to the fore and the final score line reflected their dominant half of football in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Surfers Paradise 22 . 14 . 146 def. Springwood 10 . 8 . 68.
Springwood goal kickers: Sam Moran 2, Nick Martin, Mark Thompson, Troy Harper, Jamie Donoghue, Rob Raudino 1.
Pumas best players: Mal Vincent, Jarrod Moore, Jamie Donoghue, Nick Martin, David Swan, Adam Wolbers
Congratulations to Jamie Donoghue, Nick Martin and Adam Wolbers (interchange) who were named in the PHC Round 1 "Team of the Week". The team is in the PHC Round 2 e-footy record.
Jamie Donoghue also gained 3 points in the Bill Ryan Trophy.
The Reserves also went down 10 . 7 . 67 to 5 . 9 . 39, however it should have been much closer given the Pumas inaccuracy at goal. Injuries to ruckman Geoff Gibbons and Captain Rusty Creely didn't help their cause.
Springwood goal kickers: Lenny Phillips 2, Ryan Ross, Aaron Boole, Brendon Hewitt 1
Pumas best players: Paul Bullock, Mason Harding, Simon Hamilton, Ryan Ross, Andrew Symons, Lenny Phillips
This Saturday 4th April, Springwood hosts Noosa at Lowe Oval. Noosa will be tough opponents but with the possible return of Club Captain Shane Murrihy and injured Chris Collins, it's sure to be an interesting tussle. Match times: Reserves 12 noon and Seniors 2.00 pm.
Off the field the year has started well with successful social events at the Races and the Player Auction. The spirit at the club is strong and will assist in translating to on-field success.
