What a great day of competitive footy at Murchison where after 8 quarters the scores were pretty much dead level, although our stats man Jack Murphy had concerns about the accuracy of the board. Jack always has concerns, but he usually right.
The outstanding condition of the oval, the generosity of the Murchison Cricket Club and the friendliness and co-operative spirit of the Old Brighton Grammarians made the day a memorable one indeed.
The distance, injuries and the delayed cricket finals certainly restricted our ability to get all our players on the park, but it did give many youngster a chance to play in the senior game. In fact 5 of last year’s Colts had a run and with considerable distinction.
The 33 degree heat made it imperative to have lots of players on the bench. Unfortunately, our Reserves had just the bare 18 players until Coach Jeff Rudd convinced 4 local under 16 kids to help out. The youngster were no superstars, but were very welcome indeed. Although we still ended up with only 15 players on the ground in the final quarter.
Better players for the day were Ryan Henderson who pretty well rucked all day. Luke Davis (after one night’s training), Lockie Ryan, Chris Bordin, Luke Pisano, Alex Bull , Josh Davis and Jono Dressing got four goals.
Special thanks to Gavin Dore who umpired the Reserves game at short notice. His effort was much appreciated.
The Senior game was hard and fast with our blokes having a great first half, but struggling to maintain the run and intensity for the rest of the game. The standard was excellent, which would have pleased both Clubs.
The game did suggest that this season we are going to have a lot of running skills indeed. Dean Stephen ( back from overseas), Luke Cotchett, Michael Stewart along with Leigh Morse, Daniel Mendes and Ryan Mullett were outstanding. A couple of very young boys also played a part in Cameron Dore, James Siakavelis and Lockie Ryan who had already played 4 quarters.
They were assisted by a some great ruck play from James McClure and a youngster in Travis Bird. We know big Jimmy can play, but the arrival of the “T-Bird” was a very pleasant and exciting surprise. If you had seen the size of their direct opponents, you would be more impressed with their efforts.
Without Matt Greig, Froudy was the main target helped out by Dean Millhouse and normal defender in Jamie Rushton. Froud kicked 5 and Rushton 3 and Milly would have got a couple. (did not get Jack’s score sheet)
Veterans, Aaron Nummy and Mark Cullen showed that they are not giving up their spots to the youngsters just yet with solid performances.
All in all it was a good start , but getting our full list available is the prime concern. Next week’s game at Bundoora will not be any better with the EFL Challenge Match against the VAFA on Sunday. We have 5 boys in the squad.
