Camp commenced at 6.15 at Merrimac Oval. Conditions were perfect, players less than. Couple of hours of ball work, game sense stuff, general fitness and more ball work cleared the heads for a healthy breakfast of grains, fruit and milk dutifully prepared by committee members.
Off to Broadbeach for time trials and group competition waged over various activities/exercises supervised by superfit-amateur-from-Victoria. This was followed by beachside/water work carefully watched over by Bosto who manned the safety surfboard and noah's ark watch. After 4 hours of pretty much continuous and hard work trying to keep hydrated, the group broke for a lunch of breakfast leftovers and subway sandwiches. If ever a group of players representing Broadie are going to be fit as, this is the group! Gut runners the lot.
Broadbeach State School, the other employer of Coach Smith played host to competitive games including touch, basketball and soccer???? Smithy then led the players through a series of brainstorming sessions that produced an exhaustive list of Key Performance Indicators; spekllng mistakes; season goals, aims, objectives and expectations; individual and team KPIs, team rules for positional zones; discipline expectations; behavioural expectations (only Bosto is allowed to continue to make mistakes in life); and leadership nominations. Concepts were reinforced with handouts detailing 'mission statements' and 'player codes of behaviour'. The brainstorm sessions were recorded and coaching staff will use the output to produce a coherent 'game plan' and approach to season 2009.
The group proceeded to venue four, Brannigans, for a cooling ale or three.
