After settling into the Homestead Campsite at Kenilworth on the Friday night the boys set to work on a Saturday that saw them take part in runs, games, drills, more runs, tug of war, a relieving swim and finally a bonding night with a bit of humour.
On the Saturday the boys headed to the Kenilworth Primary School for the main session of the day and a main session it was
First up were 40 metre timed sprints to see how the boys could accelerate from play to play and while there's not much you can do for such initial bursts, the competitive instincts kicked in.
A series of handball games over the next 90 minutes were tackled with great energy and the boys hung in there over the time in the heat and even coped with Rizza's repeated throws.
In between games, each team had to devise a training drill and show the rest of the squad - it was a great exercise and there are a few budding coaches amongst the ranks
A passing drill game with points attached to retaining possession or stopping same then took the boys towards lunch and it was fair to say that by the home stretch most of the boys were running on near empty petrol tanks.
Dougy was called into play when Fletch mercifully called lunch after 4 gruelling hours
You'd think a quiet run back to camp (a lazy 4-5 K's I reckon) would be hard enough but try it with a heap of tired blokes carrying a tug of war rope - the locals got into the spirit in the main street with a few high 5's and soon enough the squad reached camp
A rest - no way - it was into a Tug of War contest where you'd think that size mattered, but it was the self declared skinny team that took the chocolates
Finally - before a shower and team talk - Fletch took the boys down to the river for a slide a cool off - much appreciated by all
what impressed me most looking from the outside was the great spirit and humour amongst the group, and the great way the older guys lead with their voice and the younger players worked hard and contributed. A lot of spirit in this group - a trait that will carry them well during the year.
Saturday night was a good meal, a bit of time together and a few acts to give the boys a laugh.
The whole group would have slept well on Sunday night and will be ready to face the season ahead.
