Smithy was involved with an unknown, probably a ruckman, who rammed his car Friday night. As a consequence he copped the full brunt of air bags and last report was him being checked out for injury to his person. We hope all is well and he is back on the track Monday night. Meanwhile Boss grabbed the opportunity by the horns and was seen being ignored by all but the newest additions to the coaching staff.
New coach for the Magoos is Jason Chandler who has seen the light after 16 years at Surfers. Actually he saw the light after a couple of seasons at Southport where he made his senior debut as a player in 1992, and then went on to play in Surfers premiership teams in '92 and '98. Originally a Victorian lad who taught Dermie Brereton everything he knows at Frankston Rovers, Jayce follwed up his playing career with a 3 year stint as the Ressie's coach at Surfers and led the side to 2 prelims and one GF in the 3 years - Stiff! Still he has an easy act to follow at the Cattery, and we expect finals participation at least. Welcome Jayce and we wish you success and enjoyment in widening your horizons and accepting new challenges at the Cattery.
Jayce has brought across an assistant coach who was mistaken for Bulldog on the track by more than one sober observer. However, Toddy Hayes denies any familiar or familial links to said Bulldog. Toddy, also a Victorian, made his senior debut for Surfers in 1987 before Glasnost and the Berlin Wall came down. Toddy then had a couple of seasons with Box Hill, played around the traps in BrisVegas before returning to Surfers in 1997 and playing with Jayce in the '98 flag. He has amassed some 300 games of senior footy, and our spies tell us, revels in the Old Boys particularly against Broady. On the track to improve fitness and get to know players, Toddy may well overturn our development policy for magoos selection and press for a possie, otherwise we expect him to represent Broady Old Boys and cop a few from his ex teammates in 2009. His hobbies are shooting down helicopters and breast feeding.
And congratulations to Craig Sinclair who moves up from assistant to head coach status of the U/18s for 2009. Craig has been a player or coach for the last 27 years, serving the arid regions of Mildura 1983-99, including representative footy for Riverland while playiing for Berri, and the sub tropics of the coast playing for Broady Old Boys - wonder if Toddy has given him a whack? - and coaching underage Broadbeach teams that just might have included son Adam. Craig has a hard act to follow but anybody who is a wicketkeeper allrounder and is silly enough to support the Woodsmen, has issues and enjoys challenges.
Jackson Emblem is starring for his Darwin team but is clearly organising time to visit Kakadu and Katherine's Gorge on weekends. After a 2 week suspension following his debut Jacko returned to earn BOG accolades, unfortunately incurring the wrath of the adjudicators in the first term to earn himself another holiday. We are told, however, that Whacko Jacko hasn't upset anyone with his attack on the ball, indeed there was quiet satisfaction as the latest of his opponents has a sullied reputation for inappropriate and intimidating behaviour.
