Shaun Hart was today officially named as an assistant coach to GC17. The worst kept secret in footballing circles is out. Shaun and Marcus Ashcroft, who also has Broadie connections, will join McKenna for the GC17 season in the TAC Cup. Harty leaves Broadbeach after one season during which our young list over-performed expectations to challenge for the finals. Best of luck Shaun.
Now for the guessing game. Who will replace Shaun? Another worst kept secret?
We hear that Hutchy, Taylor Rolfe and Tyler Green are training with GC17 - we are not certain of how the system will work in the event of non-selection for GC17 games - but hopefully there are players who have fallen through the AFL recruiting cracks on their way to Queensland in general and Broadie in particular, to show their wares to GC17 powerbrokers in the lead up to 2011.
Hopefully we can release some news on recruits to Broadie for the coming season over the next few days. We can repeat that the brillant Dane Zorko has rejected offers in favour of remaining with the Catters while other stalwarts are yet to sign, and that the stone fruit pickers in Maroopna will be down on numbers in 2009. The boys commence training next week(?) so pop down and have a look at the next big things.
Eight 08 competition: It is with great disappointment that we announce that Barney with 64 pts has won the Eight08 competition. Mick Williams, Brian Rowe, Rick Trewavas, Adrian Benger and Andrew McEwan all scored a "pass mark" in excess of 50 pts. Barney tipped 7 of the final eight, with 3 in correct position and one with correct number of games won. Unfortunately he failed to tip his Hawkers as the premiers - only Punter McEwan from Rugby league land was able to tip the flag winners. Twelve of the 21 tipsters took the Demons for the spoon. Scoring system was 8 for each side tipped in the eight, 2 extra if in correct position, 2 extra if number of games won correct, 5 for premiers, 5 for spooners, and 10 for Brownlow winner (Stan Rose got close but no one got the chocolates). So much for those who have played the game at the highest levels, Wilko and Bob Walters, or those who don't support the bloods!
What do football administrators do in the off season? Four of ours - Craig Sinclair (U/18s Assistant Coach), Coach-in-a-Box Boston (Magoos Coach), Ian Spackman (Team Manager Magoos) and Spider Christie (El Presidente Juniors) - turn out for the over 40s Broadbeach-Robina Cricket Club. Craig describes himself as a wicketkeeping allrounder (think about that), the Boss tosses up lollypops and gambles on whether the ball will make the other end, Spider and Spackers open the batting and both look like they know one end (of the bat?) from the other.
