Thoughts on the result on the weekend
It was our most competitive game of the season with 1st v 2nd. I was super impressed by our young Hawks team winning by nine-goals, 42-33, against the big-bodied Wallan team in less than ideal conditions. We are undefeated halfway through the season. The girls are really playing for each other and it shows. It was great to see so many Hawks footy boys and supporters at the game cheering the girls on for the win!
Key moment that stood out for you in the game
After a dominant first half, the girls lost the third quarter and let Wallan get within 5 goals and back in the game at the final break. The girls came out in the last determined to finish strong, turning Wallan’s first centre pass over and converting at goal. We continued the pressure and extended our lead in the last to take the game out convincingly.
Key players that impressed and why
You don’t win these kinds of games without a full team effort and all the girls played brilliant netball and were focussed on their role! Amy Duff continued her outstanding season with strong drives and accurate feeding to the shooters. Gemma Baird stamped her foot on the game shooting 30 of our 42 goals at 89% accuracy and Daphne Piper returned from an 8 week knee injury to dominate in the WD role, slowing down Wallan’s attack end.
What are you looking for the group to improve on
Consistency over the four quarters. We seem to start and finish strong but have fade-outs in the 2nd and 3rd, we need to stay focussed when our combinations change and we will want to focus on maintaining 60 minutes of quality netball as we head towards finals.
Thoughts ahead of this weekend's match
We have a couple of key players unavailable this week as we did last time we played Macedon, however, our team is versatile, and young gun Jess Martin will again come up from the 17’s team. We will be looking to attack the ball early, shut down the Cats forward line, and convert our opportunities. We are confident the girls can come up with the win.
