THE resumption of the season after a three week absence had the feeling of a new year, with a degree of the unknown lingering in the build-up.
Football action saw a quartet of matches predicted to be close going off ladder positions - and three of those games ended up following such predictions.
Unfortunately however, Moe was unable to secure victory in any of those games. An explanation from someone with a greater mind than this writer as to why so many teams get themselves into winning positions and fall short would be of welcome interest.
Travelling to Leongatha, the Lions kicked as many goals as the Parrots in the seniors, however, it was the home side who did enough in the finish to win by five points.
Krisitan Jaksch was a clear best on ground with eight goals. Declan Keilty, Jacob Wood, Grady Cocksedge, Trent Baldi and Tyson Biffin also played well.
The reserves were well beaten. Better players on the day were Clint Taylor, Liam Michie and Aaron Wilson.
The thirds came home strongly but left their run too late. Best players were Will Luke, Tom Blacksahw, the real Looch - Lucian Ciuciu, Joe Skinner, Ryan Griggs and Jacob Balfour.
The Lions led at every break in the fourths except when the final siren sounded, in what was a sobering reminder about a number of football clichés. Best players were Callum Nash, Alex Styles, Brayden Jeffs, Lachlan McGrath, Riley Jessup and Bailey Wilson.
The top-of-the-table clash in A Grade saw Leongatha win 51 to 46.
Ramayer Gourley played a fine game in a losing cause, with Joanna Wietrzyk and Alex Moody other leading contributors.
There was no success either for B Grade or C Grade, who each went down. Maleah Travers and Ruby Luckie played well in B Grade, as did their C Grade counterparts Beckea Jones, Elly Brown and Taylah Jade Summersgill.
Just the one goal separated the teams in the Under 17s, but it was Moe who was on the wrong side of the coin. Haylee Wilson was voted best on court for the Lions in the Under 15s, while the Under 13s were defeated.
