At the time of writing we sit and wait…wondering when our next game of footy and netball will be. The Bloods were to have last weekend off anyway with a bye, but the entire competition joined us for an unwanted break in the 2021 season. The break will continue this weekend, and over Queen's Birthday weekend. Let's hope we can resume activities on Saturday 19 June.
After six matches, our senior footballers sit on 5 wins and 1 loss. Klix and Phillips have played their first senior games with the club, as have 6 Bloods youngsters – Borg, Jones, Roberts, Dowdy, Cooper and Robinson. All up 30 players have played senior football. Unfortunately Denham and Crone suffered season ending ACL injuries, and our thoughts continue to be with Dyson Stevens. Kighty sits on 16 goals, with the ‘twin towers’ in Ryan and Liam Carter on 13 and 12 goals respectively. Jack 'the electrician' Walker has been on fire in the midfield and must be attracting the umpires attention, although Jordyn 'Hendo' Cotter on half back might have something to say about that!
The reserves sit on 3 wins and 3 losses. With a few new faces arriving at the club in recent weeks, and some others returning from injury, the team will be looking to keep improving over the back half of the season. Already 43 players have made an appearance in the ressies, but perhaps the fact our leading goal scorer for the year is on 6 goals indicates we are looking to find some firepower up forward.
The Unders started with two wins but have lost their past three games. Jobbo is averaging four goals a game, while Evan Donoghue has stood tall in whatever role he’s been given. With the inspirational skipper Adrian Monitto due to return from injury soon, as well as tough nut Jake Sygidus, and the Clive Waterhouse look-a-like Kayne Jones, the team will be hoping to find a win again when we resume from the break.
On the netball courts, D Grade and E Grade have had strong starts to the season and currently sit in the top six, both with four wins each. A grade broke through before the bye, with B grade just inside, and C grade just outside the top six at the moment.
Our women's footy team are still looking for their first win of 2021.
While we are in lockdown, where possible please continue to support our valued sponsors. Whether it's a takeaway from Cafe Kebab, Schnitz Woodgrove or an Ajays Pizza, or throwing a Bertocchi ham into the trolley next time you're at the supermarket, please support our sponsors where you can as they look after our club. Our Punting Competition is on every Saturday. $20 to enter. Visit meltonfnc.funters.com.au to enter your tips. For those not familiar with the competition, you select one horse in each race at the main Melbourne race meeting (this week Flemington) and the punter with the highest collect at the end based on a hypothetical $1 each way bet on each selection will win our first prize. It’s a bit of fun and a great fundraiser for the club, so if you are looking for something to do tomorrow, please jump in and lodge your tips. It’s open from 11am on a Friday – and you can always change your tips prior to Race 1 on Saturday.
The Toyota Good for Footy raffle is on again in 2021, with three cars and some other great prizes up for grabs. Tickets are $5 each, and can be purchased online at the link https://toyotagoodforfooty.raffletix.com.au/meltonfnc?v=1
When we resume footy and netball, we are likely to be following modified COVID restrictions for training and playing. As far as game day is concerned, please remember that change rooms are off limits to anybody other than the players and officials involved in that particular match. We thank the majority of our members who have done the right thing. If you are unwell or showing symptoms of cold/flu you must stay at home, and all attendees must sign in using our QR code on display at the ground (home or away).
Check our website - meltonfnc.com.au for all the info you need about what’s happening at the club and remember to like our pages on social media where we will provide regular updates and content during the current lockdown.
That’s all for this week, on behalf of the committee – please stay safe and we look forward to being back together soon. GO BLOODS!
