The latest intake to the Western Sydney Academy of Sport AFL Program has been announced, with 18 emerging players rewarded for their performances at the recent AFL (NSW/ACT) Under-13 and Under-14 State Zone Trials.
The 2009 squad includes two players from Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions, Chris Nolan and Pat Pope.
A key component of the AFL (NSW/ACT) Talented Player Program, the academy provides the players with the opportunity to undertake an intensive five-month training program. The program will feature a series of game sense training sessions as well as numerous off-field education seminars.
This is the third offer of scholarships at the Western Sydney Academy of Sport, and CEO Martin Bullock is excited about the opportunities their new and expanded AFL Program is able to provide for talented young AFL players across Western Sydney.
“The AFL is clearly very committed to the establishment of a western Sydney side in the National competition. It is vital that the region’s best young players are identified and placed in a high quality program that will enable them to progress to the more elite levels – and our goal is obviously to see many young western Sydney athletes contracted to the new franchise when it gets the go ahead", he said.
All academy inductees will attend their first training session at Everley Park, South Granville on Monday, November 3.
The 2009 squad is as follows:
Taren Etto, Kyle Hopkins (Camden), Paul Green, Tyson Sims (Ingleburn), Chris Nolan, Patrick Pope (Emu Plains), Joshua Battistella (Baulkham Hills), Adrian Boelhouwer (St Clair)
