Matt Dillon from the Apple Isle has moved to Queensland to have a crack at the Velocity Sports Cup and has signed for two years with the Western Magpies. Recruited from the Glenorchy Magpies in the Southern Football League in Tasmania Dillon known as “Cracka” to his team mates could turn out to be a cracka in deed for the Western Magpies as a key pick up as they enter Division 1 for the 2009 Season.
Dillon played his first senior game of football with the Channel football Club in Country Tasmania as a 16 year old and was quickly recruited to the Glenorchy Magpies in the SFL Tasmania’s major competition midway through the 2006 season.
Matt was a member of the Tasmanian U/18 Team which competed at the 2007 U/18 National Championships and was invited to do pre season with Tasmanian Devils VFL Team in 2007 and 2008.
“Cracka” played in three Reserves Grade Premierships for the Glenorchy Magpies in 2006/7 and 8. A shoulder reconstruction at the end of 2007 hampered his 2008 preseason however he worked his way into the A Grade team and was cementing his spot when another injury set back saw him end the season in the Reserves with a premiership.
Football Manager for Glenorchy Leigh McAdam said ”Cracka is a disappointing loss to our club in his moving North with his parents because he is an outstanding prospect and has a big future”.
According to McAdam Western Magpies coach Paul Grentell will gain plenty of versatility as Dillon at 191cm and 91kg is quick and athletic, capable of playing forward and defensive roles as well as stints in the ruck. He could prove an off field bonus for the Magpies also, as he completed a traineeship as a Development Officer with AFL Tasmania during which time he set up a Young Magpies Academy at Glenorchy.
