In a dominant performance in the Grand Final our 1st grade Women are Sydney AFL Women’s Division 1 Premiers!
Camden came into the match with a defensive mindset trying to get numbers behind the ball to launch an attack, but the Goannas forward defensive pressure kept the ball in our half and the game was played on the Goanna’s terms.
Maddi Finch (leading goalkicker in Sydney AFL this season) and Cherie Tamanalevu owned our forward 50. Floating between full forward and centre half forward Cherie was dominant in the air, and was adjudged best on ground by the umpires for her influence on the game.
When the ball did make its way into Camden’s forward 50, skipper Ash Gray and the Brown sisters – Cassie, Shannon and Jacqui - rebounded quickly, turning defense into attack with Ann Barton. Tayla Duguid and newcomer Aggie Amegashie moving the ball slickly through the centre of the ground. Such was the dominance of the Goannas defence, Camden’s only score was a behind off the boot of Ash Gray.
The girls worked incredibly hard this year and the Premiership is well deserved. Even at the height of the COVID lockdown they continued to train in pairs, maintaining their fitness and developing their skills.
The Goannas are undefeated against Camden, and now celebrate their 2nd premierships in 3 years.
Goannas: 4.10 - 34
North Shore: 0.1 - 1
Many thanks to our friends at Merrylands RSL and the Gray family for their support of the Goannas in this very tough year.
