The key to the Western Magpies Pineapple Cup Premiership win was a galvanised group of young players committed to the cause under Coach Paul Grentell. However on Saturday Night at the Magpies home at Chelmer Park it could be anyone’s guess as to who will claim the Magpies Best and Fairest Award.
Pictured is Magpies GF BOG James Rozynski who it is expected will not figure strongly due to missing a number of games through injury.
Among the many contenders for the award are young gun Val Pope (20) who complimented a high on ball work rate with silky foot and hand skills and freakish overhead skills and kicked plenty of goals which should draw plenty of votes.
Ben Heffernan (19) a rover who played predominantly in the midfield described as a great user of the ball should come home strong in the voting after a slow start to the season due to a groin injury.
Luke Scott a 21 year old half forward was a model of consistency all season demonstrating a massive work rate and an ability to keep his opponents guessing.
Greg Friis, the 17 year old dynamo who had a great season in a rebound defence role and was outstanding for the Taipans at the State Championships and was unlucky to miss State U/18 selection.
21 year old David Hammil developed very well through the season as a Young CHF playing the toughest role and often defeated two opponents an outstanding achievement for any young player.
Richard Wenham (19) was the inside player credited with getting down and dirty and extracting the hard ball for his outside team mates but a late season injury may impact his run at the major award.
Flying the flag for the elder statesmen in this young group was 28 yo Adam Gillespie who returned one of his best ever seasons and his deadly accuracy around goal and application of forward pressure will have caught the eye of those giving votes.
Mark Dowley at 25 had an outstanding season often taking down the opposition No1 forward this strong defender was great all season continuing through the finals series.
The presentation evening will begin at 6.30pm with pre dinner drinks for a 7pm start.
