A large cast of punters, players and supporters turned up at the clubrooms for what was a great night. Many thanks to Mick and Ann and staff for providing us with liquid refreshment and quintessential football cholestrol snacks - Four and Twenty Hoi! Rumour is that the AFL is considering a direct telecast of the Harry Kennan Medal and Jim Stubbs Memorial Medal on Grand Final eve next year. It certainly added to the build up in 2008.
Brian Rowe looked resplendent in formal shirt, bow tie and microphone in his role as Director of First Impressions. He welcomed the under 18s as participants in the counts for the first time. The soft drink flowed freely.
Presidential Welcome
Terry Roach thanked Sponsors, Volunteers, Supporters, Coaches and Players for their contribution to season 2008. No footy club can operate without any of the above groups. We all know the challenges that face Broadie with the introduction of the GCFC to the coast and it is important that everyone sticks together. We are particularly interested in our sponsors and how we may attract/maintain their interest. We are fortunate to have volunteers who give freely of their time and energy and most of the club's servants are volunteers. El Presidente reckons we overperformed this year and acknowledged the inputs of Shaun Hart as the major contributor in this regard. Harty has continued the development, commenced under Knighter, armed with invaluable experience at the highest levels and our premiership potential is clear, particularly with a couple of key player additions that may emerge from the under eighteens.
Under 18s
Adrian Smith, who looks like he hasn't slept since the GF described the season as "good but not good enough as we did not take out the flag." Disappointment was the look, disappointment was the key, and diappointment was the attitude. Adrian Confuscious contined with " this event is not about individuals but about the players." Forty two played for the U/18s with 9 whistled up by Shaun Hart for senior games and a whopping 24 were exposed to the match day thoughts of Coach Boston in the Magoos. Captain Joey Barrile thanked "Canada" Roy for his managerial role - clearly experience as a Vancouver detective is a precondition for organising youth to be in the right place at the right time. Thanks also to Craig Sinclair. The player awards were determined through the allocation of 5 to 1 votes by 3 observers for each game.
Best and Fairest: Captain Joey Barrile with 90 votes some 30+ ahead of the field. Joey went on to senior representation and polled in the Jim Stubbs Memorial Medal
Runner-up: Mitch Scales
Future Achiever: Luke Shreever an under 16er (Heavy tag Luke, that's like calling Neil Boston as the next Shane Warne)
Most Improved: Mitch Sauer
Coaches Award: Travis Fraser
Goalkicker: Adam "Buddy" Sinclair - Competition winner as well.
Mention should be made of Scott Fleming. Most, if not all, are aware of Scott and his family's journey from Canada to Broadbeach. Broadie has been privelaged to be entrusted with a guardianship role of our great game in the international context and Scott's personal development at club level. Scott's participation at Broadie did not go unnoticed in the press and AFL circles. It is a worthwhile responsibility that the club has accepted. We have some experience in international aussie rules and we reckon that Scott's performance, in consideration of a number of factors, is arguably comparable to that of Ben Graham in the NFL. Scotty was unable to represent the club in the GF given his committment to Canada in the International Cup in Melbourne, where he topped the goalkicking and was selected in the All International team - who knows what may have happened if he was available?
The Magoos
Coach-in-a-suit Boston grabbed the microphone and reported on some good wins and copping a few hidings. While he claimed that the Magoos left half their potential in the clubrooms, his pleasure was in developing a young playing group and promoting 6 to the seniors during the year. The oldest player, Bulldog who is 26 going on 56, was singled out for special mention in his role as the 'Godfather' and protector. 'Dog is one of those blokes every footy club loves - he is always there, always willing, and this season with the assistance of Adrian, Mick and GA has raised over $5,000 for the players trip to Bali. Awas! Jangan cepat cepat brani disana!
Bos thanked the Johnson family for their invaluable contributions this year. Ray, as a frustrated doggie supporter, time keeper and provider of unsolicited advice, Joy for unparalleled performance as the interchange steward (note Footscray!), and Travis for donning the runner's yellow jersey at a fair pace, and on more than one occasion showing some flair on the forward line when the playing list was light on, proving that his troublesome knee was nearing full strength. If that wasn't enough, Joy was also a great help to Annettte in organising the canteen whenever the shutters were lifted. He also expressed his thanks to Ian Spackman for his tireless work.
Harry Kennan has done and is doing so much for this club that space defies description - and his wife is a swannie - good judge of character that Harry. The medal named in his honour was decided by the coach awarding a maximum of 3 votes per player per game limited by a team total of 17 votes per game.
Einstein assisted in the first half of the season as a demonstration in mathematics and the leaders after 10 games were Sam I"Anson and Tim MacKay on 12 each while big time senior personalties Emblem and Edwards trailed with 4 each. At seasons' end
Best and Fairest and Harry Kennan Medalist: Sam I"Anson with 23 votes
Runner-up: Bart Webster on 18 votes
Most Consistent: Nathan Quick on 17 votes
Most Improved: Adam Oehlman 11 votes
Coaches Award: Pat Evans
Team Man: Rian Denne
All of the above except for the 'Protector' gained selection in the ones during the season.
The Seniors
The winner of the Best and Fairest in the seniors as of 2008 is to be awarded the Jim Stubbs Memorial Medal. Bob Walters said a few words on behalf of Greta Stubbs. Suffice to mention that Jim founded the club in 1970 and along with a few dedicated Catters kept it afloat in good and bad times. He will be long remembered at the Merrimac Oval. The committee in their infinite wisdom requested Percy Baker to present the Jim Stubbs Memorial Medal. Percy was the first registered player at Broadie and his claims to fame include winning the 1975 B&F; captaining the club in 72-73, 75-76, 82-86; Board member; Keeper of the urinals, Leader of the Burra supporters on the Coast, and has power of attourney for Boccy in the instance of the Tigers ever winning a flag.
Shaun Hart thanked the committee for taking a punt on an untried coach. His take on the season was expressed in two parts: on and off field. Clearly the on field results were up and down but he was convinced that the next five years would be exciting in that regard. Off the field he was up beat. Shaun is about football clubs and personnel bettering the community and themselves and this year the BBAFC has commenced to do their part within the community context. Players and committee members have assited Shaun's Church to raise some $8,500 cash and $3,000 worth of groceries for the needy at Christmas time. All in all it was a great year for him and he received a lot of enjoyment in being involved with the BBAFC as well as learning heaps about the coaching caper. Thanks were expressed to Bos, Normie "Where do I plug in the computer" Steer, Dion Carr, Rolfey as Chairman of Selectors, Spackers, Goughy, Tiny and the committee for their professionalism. Players came in for a few orchids also with the observation that they deserve congratulations for their efforts which receive little reward in the scheme of things. He noted that there were 55 players at the door for selection at season's start and his thoughts on leadership developed to the point where we had the two youngest co-captains in the competition (Tinker and JD).
The Memorial Medal was awarded on the basis of Harty rating every player from 0 - 3 for every game played. After 10 rounds it was 8 to 1 the field with Tinker, Dicko and Nathan Lyons on 17 votes, Bart Webster's bethrothed on 16, Jacko and Ben Walters on 14 with the other Dick, Hamish, on 13 and JD lagging with 11 votes. At the count end with Harty's comments in quotes.
Best and Fairest and Jim Stubbs Memorial Medallists: Dayne Zorko and Wade Dickson on 33 votes (we recall Dicko's tally as 1 in the Grogan Medal)
Most Consistent: Nathan Lyons 27 votes polled in 17 of 19 games. Nathan polled votes in more games than anyone else.
Coaches Award: Mitch Andrews also on 27 votes and "another 50% in the potential tank"
Team Man: Jesse Derrick 26 votes "Would bleed for his jumper"
Most Improved: Jackson Emblem 23 votes and "will become the premier full back in the comp"
Best First Year: Taylor Rolfe 21 votes " Will make the grade at AFL level"
Goalkickng Award: Dayne Zorko
Other Awards
50 Senior games: Sam Edwards. Selamat Jalan
The Ultimate Accolade - Life Membership: Dale Perkins. What hasn't this bloke done for the club?
Club Person of the Year: Paul Rolfe. What about a couple of more kids for the side - Andrea is real keen.
