Congratulations to Mausam Patel and Sasuni Alahendra, both members of our 2019 Waverley Park Hawks Under 16 Girls Team, who were recently selected for the Victorian Under 17 Girls Multicultural Team and Jim Stynes AFL Program.
This program promotes football development and embraces cultural identity, whilst also educating young multicultural women about pathways that are available to them within the AFL; associated with playing, coaching, umpiring and administration. Participants are also supported to engage with the elite NAB League youth AFL competition and additional talent pathways, to enhance and fast track their football skills.
Sasuni and Mausam recently attended a high performance AFL camp that was based at the North Melbourne Football Club, where they were mentored and trained by leading players and coaches from the AFLW and AFL. The two day camp also involved a range of education sessions focusing on cultural identity, health and nutrition, active recovery, wellbeing, game analysis and team structures.
The girls also played in a match against the ‘Boorimul’ Victorian U17 Girls Indigenous AFL Team at RAMS Stadium, with both Hawks players standing tall and representing themselves and their cultures with distinction. Their attack on the footy, fantastic team work, clean disposal and tireless tackling pressure was something to behold. Both teams played the game in the correct spirit and it was great to see them come together after the match to celebrate their achievements in the sheds as one. The coaches and support staff from both teams were so impressed with the courtesy and respect shown by the girls, in addition to their positive attitude and also eagerness to develop their skills with the Sherrin.
We can’t wait to see what Sasuni and Mausam achieve both on and off the footy field in the near future, hopefully we will be able to barrack for them both in the AFLW following their playing days at the Waverley Park Hawks!
