FINAL SCORE - SENIORS PRELIMINARY FINAL
BALWYN 19-8-122 def NOBLE PARK 6-16-52
Just a brief summary of the match for our supporters interstate and overseas. Balwyn had a 6goal breeze in the first quarter and made full use of it. They kicked 10-2 to 1-2 to set up the result. Decorsey, who did not play last week against Vermont and Bowden kicked 7 of the 10 goals. They were obviously stung by last week’s loss. After 1/4 time Balwyn kicked 9-6 to 5-14 – so Noble Park had 4 more scoring shots. Donati and Little both retired after the game.
Comment from Lee Bidstrup Club Manager :- What wonderful players they have been. Adrian played in a premiership with Vermont and is one of the best players seen in the competition and one of the finest sportsmen. He is always welcome at Vermont.
FINAL SCORE - RESERVES PRELIMINARY FINAL
EAST BURWOOD 13-11-89 def VERMONT 9-12-66
The Rams set up their grand final berth when they kicked the first 4 goals of the match into the wind. We answered late in the quarter when Smith snapped a goal followed by Rosewarne. At ¼ time The Rams led 4-4 to 2-2.
It was always going to be difficult after that.
Although East Burwood kicked 2 more goals there were a couple of individual efforst that are worth reporting – a tackle by Whitchell and a smother by Rosewarne. Half way through the 2nd term the wind dropped and went across the ground. Goals from Dorbolo and Conroy which meant we were close enough if good enough. At half time they led 6-6 to 4-3. Better players for the half were Johnson, Smith, Stewart and McLure.
It was game on for a while when Rosewarne goaled via Whitchell. Whitchell was to have a terrific quarter. But then The Rams kicked another 2 goals into the wind and led by 19 points. Dressing kick one from the boundary but the celebrations were short lived when The Rams kicked another. At ¾ time they led 9-9 to 6-10. McLure again rucked all day.
The Rams blew the game away when they goaled within 15 seconds then followed with 2 more. It was all over. It took us 17 minutes to kick our first through Davis then Rosewarne kicked 2 more. The Rams winners by 23 points. Better players for the half were Whitchell, McLure, Smith, Griffiths, Johnson and Bordin.
Goalkickers – Rosewarne 4 and singles to Smith, Dressing, Davis, Dorbolo and Conroy.
Best Players – McLure, Johnson, Smith, Whitchell and Griffiths
Coach’s Comments – If our third quarter had have been 7-2 rather than 2-7 it may have been a different story. We have had a fantastic season – we were 0-3 after three matches but we turned it around. It’s been a fantastic season and 11 reserves players played senior football this year.
Comment – My thanks to Jeff Rudd and team manager Paul Conroy for their assistance in letting me do my job of reporting each week.
FINAL SCORE – COLTS PRELIMINARY FINAL
NORWOOD 15-11-101 def VERMONT 12-15-87
It was an interesting first quarter as we kicked into a strong breeze. The early signs were good. After 2 early misses both McInerney and Debney goaled. One of the features was a terrific tackle by McInerney. After such a great start they managed the last 4 goals of the quarter as they were starting to outmark us. At ¼ time they led 4-0 to 2-3. At this stage I thought we were well placed especially with the wind to come. We did not need an early goal by Norwood but then we started to string a few together. McInerney and Cameron both goaled and when Debney kicked a long goal then Ryan passed to Debney for another we were 10 points in front nearing half time.Unfortunatley, it happened last week and it happened again Norwood goaled on the siren. There did not seem to be a time clock awareness by our players. At ½ time we led 6-6 to 6-1. Better players for the half were – Jones, McInerney, Bull, Huisman, Debney and Geraghty.
A good start to the 3rd term when Rogneda goaled upwind. Sadly it was one way traffic after that at as Norwood proceeded to demolish us by kicking the next 6 goals. We had too many players down some unsighted for most of the day. Our 5 point lead at ½ time had been turned into a 27 point defecit at ¾ time. They led 12-6 to 7-9. A special mention to Quon, Close and Jones during the quarter.
In the last quarter we kicked 5-6 to 3-5 but we were too far behind. They continually outmarked us and were playing much better. Last quarter goals came from Ryan who kicked 2 then Handley and Geraghty via Dore. Our last goal of the season was kicked by McKernan. I noted we hit the post 3 times during the match. Better players for the half were Jones, Geraghty and Close and Quon in the 3rd quarter.
Goalkickers – Debeney 3, Ryan 2, McInerney 2 and singles to Handley, Rogneda, Cameron, McKernan and Geraghty.
Best Players – not in order – Geraghty, Jones, Huisman and McInerney.
Coach’s Comments – It was not the result we came for – congratulations on a great year – you were a great group to coach. I will not be coaching next year.
Comment – I wish to thank Greg Macdonald, Mike Villani and team manager Larry Bird for their help in assisting me with information each week. Not too many clubs get a detailed report on matches other than the seniors. I t makes Vermont unique.
